medjuck Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Just listening to the David Quintet wItH Coltrane in Holland April 9, 1960 and noticed that during his solo on Walkin', Miles plays the little ditty that eventually became Jean Pierre. That's 20 years before he recorded Jean Pierre. Anyone haves any other early sightings of it? Quote
king ubu Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Yup, in "Walkin'" from the "Amsterdam Concert", 1957-12-08, with Barney Wilen & the René Urtreger trio. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 On one of the 60s CBS albums ('Filles' I think) Miles plays part of this theme as he closes out one of the tracks. Quote
ValerieB Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 does anyone know who the tune was written for? Quote
bertrand Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Wasn't he Frances Taylor's son, I guess by a previous marriage? Bertrand. Quote

JSngry Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 There was talk back in the day of it being a French child's song, a playground riff of sorts. This could still be accurate, no? Quote
king ubu Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 So did he learn it from Juliette Greco or from Jeanne Moreau? Quote
JSngry Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 http://hepcat1950.com/mdiv8504.html JAZZ: And "Jean Pierre" is a tune that's obviously very important to you. [One of Davis' sons is named Jean Pierre.] MILES DAVIS: You know, it's for kids. The melody is French. But that's the end of the record. I named it "Jean Pierre Then There Were None," you know, because of the big explosion. You'll like it. It's a nice album. Quote
medjuck Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Yup, in "Walkin'" from the "Amsterdam Concert", 1957-12-08, with Barney Wilen & the René Urtreger trio. That's one I don't have. Anyone know if it's available? Given the two examples we have from the period maybe it should be called "Little Dutch Boy" or something like that. Quote
king ubu Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 Be aware that the issues run at a wrong speed... so if you care, you better look for it in collectors' vaults, if I'm allowed to say this here. Quote
