bertrand Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 This may very well be the first 'live in Brittany' jazz album ever. Brownie? I wonder if there's a version of '8-4-6-3-9-9-9' on this. Bertrand. Quote
brownie Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Catching up on this. No version of '8-4-6-3-9-9-9' but there is a version of '6, 5, 7, 3'! Mais oui, there is a lively jazz scene on our West Coast! The Barry Harris Live in Rennes album can be downloaded here. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 My copy of Barry Harris - Live In Rennes - arrived in the mail on Thursday. Looking forward to hearing it. This brings back memories as I spent a month in Rennes back in 1973. Don't recall finding much , if any, jazz there at that time. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Brad, Listened to this new Barry Harris CD this morning. Barry has long been one of my very favorite piano players. This is a live concert cd which has its positives and negatives. On the negative side is that Barry talks to the audience quite a bit. That is fine the first time you hear it, but is not something I like to have to hear each time I play the cd. So in the future when I play this cd i will program it to just hear the music. The rhythm section seems to be local musicians. They do ok but nothing memorable. The cd times out at 49:05, and if you deduct the time Barry is talking, the actual amount of music on the cd is somewhere in the range of 39 minutes. On the positive side, Barry plays very well. The audio quality is also quite good. If you are a fan of Barry Harris as I am, you will want to have this cd. However, there are a number of other cd's available by Barry that , in my view, one should have before acquiring this one. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Barry's first set at the Village Vanguard on Wednesday was broadcast live over NPR and is archived. Quote

AllenLowe Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 interested to listen, as I haven't seen Barry in some time. He's also, IMHO, one of the hardest pianists to record because of his touch, which is slightly percussive yet subtle. Quote
brownie Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 That Live in Rennes is really excellent. An introspective - at times - that proves to be highly inventive. He makes his audience feel comfortable. The recording is only marred by accompanists that fail to stimulate Harris. With one exception, the talks with the audience remain short and will not bother when relistening to the disc. Quote
