Vague, perhahps, but I'm wondering if anyone could direct my attention to more recordings from this era. I'm thinking particularly of things like Stan Getz's Roost recordings, Sonny Stitt's early Prestige material, Gene Ammons' Young Jug etc. Lo-fi, 2-3 minute small group jazz from the late 40s/early 50s that bridges the gap from bop to hard bop or mainstream. There's just something so perfect about this approach to me ... I can't get enough.

Gene Ammons - Red top - Savoy Jazz

First 4 tracks are 1947 cuts for Savoy by Leo Parker, with Ammons and his rhythm section + Howard McGhee. Rest are 1953 recordings by Ammons for United and sound fabulous. Johnny Coles was in the 1953 sessions.

The Leo Parker material is as good as the material he recorded for Savoy with Dex as a sideman (included in Dex compilations on Savoy Jazz).

I have a nice RCA compilation of Diz cuts from 1946 & 1947. This is so good that, every time I play it, I'm determined to buy a more complete compilation of that RCA material (but I never have). Any recommendations for that, for me?

Also, James Moody. I used to have some Blue Note stuff - VG+++ And also his Savoy material was fine. Also his Prestige stuff - up to about 1953 is the period you want, I guess. Actually, I could do with more Moody from this period, myself :)

Finally, I don't think this is on "Stitt's bits"

Milt Jackson & Sonny Stitt - In the beginning - OJC

This stuff was recorded for Sensation records in Detroit in 1948 and is VERY ACE INDEED!

Thanks for the recs! I do have the Prestige First sessions, Dameron/Navarro, Gillespie and Marmarosa material, but I will certainly check out the others.

Oh, and yes, you cannot go wrong with Diz's Complete RCA Victor Recordings.

In addition to all of the excellent suggestions above:

Art Blakey/James Moody, NEW SOUNDS

Howard McGhee, TRUMPET AT TEMPO

Thelonious Monk, GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC (V. 1 and 2)

Bud Powell, MAD BEBOP (some overlap with Dexter G. SETTIN' THE PACE)

Bud Powell, AMAZING BUD POWELL V. 1 (some overlap with Dameron/Navarro, iirc)

J.J. Johnson, ORIGINS: SAVOY SESSIONS

Illinois Jacquet, anything from the Mosaic box (such as Chuck's Apollo rec)

Dexter Gordon, COMPLETE DIAL SESSIONS

Dizzy Gillespie/Sonny Berman/Fats Navarro, COMPLETE DIAL MASTERS: MODERN JAZZ TRUMPETS

Allen Eager, ACE FACE

Brew Moore, THE KEROUAC CONNECTION

I know what you mean about this period/style, colinmce; I have a similar love for it. Thanks for starting the topic.

An excellent double CD anthology from Frémeaux & Associés

Nice compilation for those who are totally new into the music but all others will probably have almost all of it.

And uh oh ... turning the Cab's "Pickin' The Cabbage" into "Pickin' The GARBAGE" in the track listing. Hopefully not in the booklet. The Hi De Ho Man won't like it!

And "Woody And You" is odd too. ;)

May I suggest...

Excellent suggestion, I listen to this stuff repeatedly and never tire of the magnificent trumpet "battle" between Fats and McGhee on "Double Talk". Fabulous two disc set.

I would add, of course, master take CD sets of all the Bird Savoy and Dial material.

Thanks. I have the Monk, Powell, Jacquet and JJ Johnson discs, but will absolutely check out the others. The James Moody, Dexter Gordon, Diz/Savoy and Coleman Hawkins (as per papsrus' post) have been on my "to buy" list for quite a while.
