Great price for a great set. I agree with Chuck, these are Bill Evans' best recordings since his Riverside days. The accompanying set, Consecration, is just as good.

I know that I am in a small minority, but I even like this better than the Riversides. These recordings, You Must Believe in Spring, and the 1979 Buenos Aires concert are probably my absolute favorite Bill Evans.

I agree. It's a great price for this box :tup

I disagree. Don't think it's one of Bill Evans' best performances.

The trio was much better inspired on the Paris concerts (Edition One and Edition Two) that came out on Elektra. That San Francisco gig did not turn out to be a very happy one and it shows!

I just think Evans' playing is more compelling in this box, a bit less so in the 2nd box from this gig.

It is strange that they put only second sets on the Last Waltz box, and only first sets on the Consecration box. It makes the set lists from different nights even more similar on each box than they would have been if complete nights had been packaged together. For example, Theme From Mash appears repeatedly on Consecration, but never on the Last Waltz. Happily, iPods playlists will allow you to integrate the two boxes in a natural way. :)

I think they realised that two boxes of entire evenings wouldn't really make sense - people might not feel they need the second box when it came out. The way they did it each box has its own concept and the second box has tunes not in the first at all.

That said, I don't think anyone should ever follow this pattern again!
