Free For All Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 I sure wish that Harold Mabern had been able to play on a better piano. And that Lee had been in better shape. Could have been a lot better that it was. Quote
felser Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 I sure wish that Harold Mabern had been able to play on a better piano. And that Lee had been in better shape. Could have been a lot better that it was. I agree with that. The song selection wasn't especially inspiring either. Definitely less than the sum of it's parts and a disappointment for a mid-60's Blue Note with the artists involved. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Tapes delivered by the artist to fulfill a contract so he could move on to another label. Quote
Brad Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Pretty awful album. An oxymoron for a title. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Hmm - I always enjoy listening to it ! Agree that it is not the best Hubbard or Morgan of the period and sloppy in execution but it's an atmospheric recording, nevertheless. Quote
Stereojack Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Hmm - I always enjoy listening to it ! Agree that it is not the best Hubbard or Morgan of the period and sloppy in execution but it's an atmospheric recording, nevertheless. I agree with Sidewinder. The trumpet battle between Lee and Freddie on the first track has always held interest for me. Quite clearly this was an alcohol-fueled gathering that we may have viewed differently if it had emerged thirty years later as a newly discovered tape. Quote
marcoliv Posted April 10, 2011 Author Report Posted April 10, 2011 (edited) I noticed this Amazon Marketplace offer but i thought i could try here first as i knew no one really likes this I'll go for the Marketplace one then. Free For All Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 I didn't mean to say I didn't like it, just that it could have been so much better. I'm a Freddie/Lee fan, so I was excited to find this but was hoping for more fireworks. Quote
marcoliv Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 Ok, amazon marketplace seller wasn't able to deliver this so i'm all open for offers once again! Cheers MCO Quote
