Bargain DVD boxes

Recommended Posts

The bargain box thread has been a hit, so I thought I would start a similar thread for DVD boxes.

Secret Agent aka Danger Man, The Complete Collection (18 DVDs) has been reduced to $38.99.

It looks like this one has gone out of print. It's now going for $94.36.

Short notice as this deal is only good today, but Fox Connect has the huge and comprehensive "Ford at Fox" mega-box on sale for 80% off with coupon code GRAPES.

Not sure if the 80% off is calculated using the full retail price of $300, or the currently-discounted price of $195, but either way it's a serious deal. If I didn't already have this set I'd be all over it.

I don't think I've heard of the movies on discs 9 - 18. Are they any good?

That group of discs is largely divided between silents and comedies from the 30s. If you're more than a casual Ford fan, there are some hidden gems there (and if you're not, you might be by the time you've made it through all of the films in this set).

I found a few solid Region 2 bargains (well, to me pretty decent bargains if VAT is removed)

10 DVD 18 film set of Werner Herzog -- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Werner-Herzog-Collecton-10-Disc-DVD/dp/B00I7SZZZW/ref=sr_1_4?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1401520994&sr=1-4&keywords=herzog

(Blu-ray set is more but probably worth it for you BR fans: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Werner-Herzog-Collection-8-Disc-Blu-ray/dp/B00I7TXG7U/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1401520994&sr=1-1&keywords=herzog )

This covers all 5 of the feature films from the Herzog Kinski box set (which incidentally is basically OOP in region 1 but still available in region 2) but not the documentary My Best Fiend.

Luis Bunuel box: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DYWIBSY/ref=s9_simh_co_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=left-1&pf_rd_r=1Y9CV4046AMQ4Y10BE1M&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=486082727&pf_rd_i=typ01

(This is tempting, but I'll hold off for now.)

For the kids, I thought this was a good deal -- 6 Muppets films including the fairly recent one with Jason Segal for 14 pounds: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Muppets-Film-Collection-DVD/dp/B0081NA5H6/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1401521236&sr=1-2&keywords=muppets

What it does not have is Muppets Take Manhattan, but that can be found in another box set for the absurd price of 3 pounds: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Film-Box-Set-Muppets-Manhattan/dp/B006GELMQA/ref=pd_bxgy_d_h__img_y

So I know what I'll be watching for the next few weekends...

Thanks for the links, ejp626; too bad my DVD player won't play region 2. I also noticed this, which i'd jump on in a heartbeat, especially for £19.99:

Collection of eight films from celebrated French auteur Eric Rohmer. 'The Aviator's Wife' (1981) is a psycholgical study of jealousy and infidelity, following a student who discovers that his girlfriend is cheating on him and who then decides to spy on her. In 'A Good Marriage' (1982), promiscuous Sabine (Béatrice Romand) decides to stop having affairs and find herself a decent husband after she meets her best friend's cousin. 'Pauline at the Beach' (1983) is a subtle comedy about holiday romance and the complexity of human relationships. Marion (Arielle Dombasle) decides to spend the last few weeks of summer at the family beach house in Normandy. She takes along her fifteen-year-old cousin Pauline (Amanda Langlet), a sensitive and fragile girl on the verge of womanhood. At the beach the two meet up with Pierre (Pascal Greggory), Marion's humourless and obsessive ex-lover. Marion soon falls for Henri, despite Pierre declaring his love for her, while Pauline discovers a holiday romance of her own. 'Full Moon in Paris' (1984) is a low-key study of a young woman who finds it impossible to settle down, flitting between her boyfriend in the country and a new potential love in Paris. 'The Green Ray' (1986) follows Delphine (Marie Riviere), a lonely young secretary who sets off on numerous trips abroad in an attempt to find a lover, with no success, and then has a chance meeting with someone on the platform at Biarritz station on the way home. 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend' (1987) is a lighthearted comedy of manners, about two young women who meet and become friends, until each one falls for the other's boyfriend. 'Love in the Afternoon' (1972) is an earlier study of love and the nature of monogamy, following a bourgeois office worker who is gradually seduced by an old friend's mistress. Finally, 'The Marquise of O' (1976) is a period drama set during the Franco-Prussian war, about a young woman who becomes pregnant even though she has not slept with a man since her husband's death two years previously.

I know we are all trying to declutter our lives ;) , but I bought a cheap DVD player that could be made multi-region (well, you also have to make sure it will play PAL). It was a good investment, in addition to any "good" DVD player I had. For that matter, you can pick up a cheap laptop and change the settings to R2 (can only be changed a few times, but if you just leave it R2, there's no problem) and watch DVDs on that. There have been some amazing deals on box sets from Amazon.co.uk over the years, and I wasn't going to let them get away...
