Dave James
there is a new chet baker biography on the way. matthew ruddick is the author. looks interesting: http://www.funnyvalentine.org/Funny_Valentine/Funny_Valentine.html keep boppin´ marcel I thought Deep In A Dream was a pretty good book, but I'm such a sucker for Chet, I'm sure I'd give this one a spin. You gotta give the author credit just for compiling a discography.
jostber
Looking forward to read this book which seems to focus on his music. Cite: Thirdly, this book contains a wealth of original material. I have interviewed approximately one hundred and sixty musicians and friends in the writing of this book. Many of them felt that the last biography focused primarily on Chet’s lifestyle, rather than the music he left behind. I like to think that ‘Funny Valentine’ paints a more balanced portrait, whilst correcting many of the errors that appeared in the last book. Niko
i assume "the last book" refers to Gavin and not to the excellenz deValk biography... the guy loses quite some sympathies for saying "the last book" to often (as if the goal was to be better than the previous biography published (as opposed to any biography publishd), anyway, of course i am interested... brownie
The various links inside the website appear quite interesting and seriously researched. Looking forward to purchase the book when it comes out!
Lazaro Vega
Thought the deValk biography was helpful. He points to Chet Baker in Tokoyo (Evidence ECD 22158-2), a 1987 concert recording, as being one of Baker's great late period performances caught on record. IMO, not just one of Baker's best late period recordings, but one of his best, period.
