Tom in RI
I saw an eBay listing for a Zoot Sims/Al Cohn records on the Fred Miles Presents label. A google search didn't turn anything up except a popsike listing of the same lp sold in 2006 (for 127 usd). Can anyone tell me more about this label? Niko
apparently it's an early 60s label from Philadeplhia run by one Fred Miles, formerly the doorman at Bill Kretchmer's jam session is all the bio I've seen so far... this page looks interesting
Dan Gould
Aside from the inherent rarity of the output of a label like that, I would consider any of the seemingly countless Al + Zoot sessions that are easier and cheaper to find. Obviously, one goes after the more common releases first in one's pursuit of recordings by favorite artists, but I know the Al & Zoot Fred Miles LP, and it's a real winner. Btw, it was reissued on Zim in the early 1980's, so one doesn't have to pay a premium to hear the music.
brownie
The Al Cohn-Zoot Sims album was the only release from the Fred Miles Presents label, back in 1961: The album was reissued in 1976 on Art Zimmerman's Zim label (LP SMS-2002): Recent CD appearance on Lonehill's 'Zoot Sims/Al Cohn - The Hoagy Carmichael Sessions and More'. Tom in RI
Thanks for all the responses. I won't be bidding for the lp, I was just curious about the label. I'll keep an eye out for the Zim reissue.
paul secor
The Al Cohn-Zoot Sims album was the only release from the Fred Miles Presents label, back in 1961: The album was reissued in 1976 on Art Zimmerman's Zim label (LP SMS-2002): Recent CD appearance on Lonehill's 'Zoot Sims/Al Cohn - The Hoagy Carmichael Sessions and More'. Also reissued as a Baybridge LP in Japan with the original cover, which is how I have it. Edited July 17, 2011 by paul secor
Christiern
I knew Fred, he always wore a bowler hat and was somewhat eccentric, although I always had a feeling that some of that eccentricity was store bought. A nice guy who probably never mad a cent on his albums.
brownie
Was this ever on the Fred Miles label? My copy of this album is on the FM label created by Monte Kay. Monte Kay is credited as producer on my FM copy of it! No mention of Fred Miles on the back cover or on Willis Conover's liner notes.
