GA Russell Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 (edited) Here's a video of surfer Garrett McNamara and the 78 foot wave he rode off the Portugese coast in November, accompanied by surf guitar music! The Guinness Book of World Records has recognized it as the biggest wave ever recorded. http://www.theglobea...article2429736/ Edited May 12, 2012 by GA Russell Quote
J.A.W. Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 For us metric Europeans: that's about 23.77 meters. Quote

Brownian Motion Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 Surely tsunami get higher than that? MG Actually, no. As Wikipedia explains: Tsunami waves do not resemble normal sea waves, because their wavelength is far longer. Rather than appearing as a breaking wave, a tsunami may instead initially resemble a rapidly rising tide, and for this reason they are often referred to as tidal waves. Tsunamis generally consist of a series of waves with periods ranging from minutes to hours, arriving in a so-called "wave train".[4] Wave heights of tens of metres can be generated by large events. Although the impact of tsunamis is limited to coastal areas, their destructive power can be enormous and they can affect entire ocean basins; the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was among the deadliest natural disasters in human history with over 230,000 people killed in 14 countries bordering the Indian Ocean. GA Russell Posted January 30, 2013 Author Report Posted January 30, 2013 Garrett McNamara has done it again! This time the claim is that the wave was 100 ft. high. Same beach in Portugal. Here's the video: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jan/29/surfer-garrett-mcnamara-100ft-wave Quote
Blue Train Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 You have to keep in mind there are different ways of measuring waves. The 77.76 foot one was initially reported as 90. Having said. It's still amazingly huge wave no matter the final height. Quote
