flat5 Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Don't see it posted so... Marjorie Hyams (1920-2012) has died. http://www.jazzwax.com/ Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Had no idea she was still around but this is sad at any rate ... RIP. She participated in many intersting and intriguing 40s small-group jazz recordings that were gems and pointed in new directions. Too bad jazz had not really been ripe yet for INSTRUMENTALIST women (other than pianists) at that time. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Certainly a significant contribution as a member of George Shearing's early group - RIP. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 She was one of the top bebop vibists until she married and stopped her national career - you can hear her on the aerly Shearing Quintet sessions on Savoy and MGM and a number of Woody Herman tracks. 92 years - quite a stretch. R.I.P. - will play some Hearing sides with her later this evening. Quote
BillF Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Here she is in a detail from a photo of the Herman band in 1945, Chubby Jackson in the background: Quote

mikeweil Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Oh - I didn't look at the exact date of birth - thanks, hans, for correcting. Quote
