brownie Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Bassist Don Bagley died last week. Obituary in The Los Angeles Times Marc Myers devoted a JazzWax column on Bagley yesterday. Quote
BillF Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Present on some very fine records in my collection: Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Bought the CD reissues (Blue Moon) of his "Basically Bagley" and "Jazz On The Rocks" LPs from the 50s some time ago and like them a lot. RIP. Quote
tomatamot Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Don Bagley - "Jazz horizons: The soft sell" ( late night music ) Played this album earlier today. Quote
Dave James Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 A really unique, ultra-fat sound on the double bass. Thanks to Marc Myers for once again making me aware of someone with whom I was not familiar. Quote
JSngry Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 A really unique, ultra-fat sound on the double bass. And yet weirdly consistently under-recorded (in terms of volume) by Kenton, or whoever at Capitol made that decision. But good time, him & Stan Levey swung like hell together behind the soloists in that band. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Blue Moon still has their reissues available - I think I should check his records out, after all these recommendations. The Soft Sell, in particular, looks interesting, with Jimmy Rowles and all. Quote
