ghost of miles Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 Tried to post this yesterday but couldn't get onto the board from home, for some reason. It's Mosaic's reply to my follow-up query about the forthcoming Woody Herman Columbia set: Sorry for the typo. The years are 1945-47 and it will be a 7 CD set. Seven CDs! I had initially heard that it would probably be five... Sounds like a treasure trove for First Herd lovers. Hi GoM, Damn! Thanks for the good news! I'll be grabbing this one the day it comes out... Cheers, Shane I agree, Shane. I will quite happily relegate the BLOWIN' UP A STORM comp to the traveling-jazz shelf when this one comes out! (Although Ralph Burns' essay was a nice touch.) About a year ago I picked up a remaindered copy of Gene Lees' LEADER OF THE BAND, and I think I may start reading it now in anticipation of this Mosaic. Quote
Brad Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 That news about the Herman set is very exciting indeed: Ralph Burns, what an incredible arranger. Sonny Berman, ay! my mouth is watering indeed. For those who don't know him, what a treat and what a great trumpeter. Had drugs not got him, he'd be mentioned in the same breath with all the greats. That Keynote LP box is indeed incredible. The liner notes are equally amazing and this is a label deserving of special treatment. Mercury in Japan put out a few cds a while ago. If you can find that, you'll get a sense of what it's all about. Mighty special stuff. Let's hope the First Herd material and the Keynote material don't come out near the same time or I'll be a pretty poor man indeed. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 As nice as it would be to have a Keynote Mosaic, that Japanese lp box is one of the most incredible sets ever! (big edit) I'll bet it won't include the unreleased (and untitled) 45 by Lennie Tristano that came with the Japanese set! If you called the US office at the time, they would send the Tristano 45. This music was included in the Tristano cd. The cd version of the Benny Carter material contains a bunch of alternates not included in the lp box. I still have the lp box and the cds of Carter, Hawkins, Prez, Tristano, etc. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 4, 2004 Author Report Posted February 4, 2004 I passed on a used copy of the Carter in an Ann Arbor shop several years ago--in anticipation of the Mosaic set--and am still kicking myself for having done so. I have the Hawk, Tristano, and Prez material on CD. Still hoping for a fullblown version of the box on Mosaic rather than Selects, but whatever they can put out will be greatly appreciated by many of us, I'm sure. Didn't Keynote also record some folk, too? I'm assuming that wasn't part of the LP box--just a side curiosity of mine. Quote
nina low Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 I have seven of the ten cd series of the Essential Keynote Collection. Looks like some of these were issued in the US, Japan and possibly Spain. With a couple of multiple cd's the complete set consists of 14 cd's. Volume 1-The Complete Lester Young(Lester Young Quartet, Kansas City Seven) Volume 2-The Complete Lennie Tristano(Lennie Tristano Trio) Volume 3-Early Bebop(Red Rodney's Be-Boppers, Neal Hefti Orchestra) Volume 4-2 cds-Roy Eldridge and the Swing Trumpets(Jonah Jones and his Orchestra, Roy Eldridge and his Trumpet Ensemble, Charlie Shavers Quintet w/Earl Hines, Corky Corcoran and His Orchestra, J.C. Hears Quintet w/Buck Clayton, Ted Nash Quintet w/Joe Thomas, Joe Thomas and His Orchestra) Volume 5-The Fabulous Ellingtonians(Rex Stewarts Big Eight, Billy Taylors Big Eight, Barney Bigard Quintet, Juan Tizol and His Orchestra) Volume 6-The Complete Coleman Hawkins-4 cds-(Coleman Hawkins Quintet, Cozy Cole All Stars, Coleman Hawkins and his Sax Ensemble, ColHaw All American Four, Col Haw Quintet, Charlie Shavers All American Five, George Wettling's New Yorkers) Volume 7-The Complete Benny Carter-(BenCar Quintet, Arnold Ross Quintet) Volume 8-Red Norvo Improvisations Volume 9-The Keynotersw/Nat King Cole(also Charlie Shavers, Jonah Jones, Budd Johnson, Willie Smith, Johnny Guarnieri, Milt Hinton, J.C. Heard, Red Callender, Jackie Mills) Volume 10-The Small Herds:Chubby Jackson & Bill Harris Numerous alternate takes on many of the cds(6 of Tristano's "Interlude") but great music. At one time these were usually found pretty cheaply in used music stores. Wonder if these are going to be re-issued is they will follow somewhat the same format or elliminate many alternate takes. desertblues Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 If Mosaic does indeed do a Keynote set, I hope it's a complete one. Aside from the superlative material from Hawk, Prez, Benny Carter and the other well-known musicians, the sessions with obscure cats like tenorman Babe Russin and unlikely sidemen like Skitch Henderson (!!!) on piano make this a set that needs to be complete IMHO. J.A.W. Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 According to Mosaic's Scott the Tal Farlow set will be out in June 2004. Quote
