I'm a big fan of Edmar Castaneda, so I won't be missing the Diego Urcola group.

i'm really looking forward to that lush instrumentation.

someone tore up the smalls house bass a few days ago in an afterhours thing.

Those two sets were fabulous.

EVEN BETTER THAN THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I immediately ordered the new Diego Urcola CD.

This past week, I was able to watch/hear and enjoyed, Pilc, Moutin, Hoenig on Monday night, Dayna Stephens (with Aaron Parks) on Wednesday night, and Saul Rubin (with Stacey Dillard) on Saturday night.

And Gene Bertoncini, aged 76, sounded beautiful last night.

I didn't hear that, as the last two nights I have been having connection problems--I'm not sure if it is the broadcast or on my end.

I don't usually stay up that late, but this is a pretty good week at the club. I wish I could be there in person this week.

Monday night, I heard a set by Ari Hoenig with Jean Michel Pilc. Last night, a set by the Frank Lacy, Stacey Dillard, Theo Hill, Josh Evans regular Tuesday night group.

Wednesday and Thursday feature Brian Charette's Organ Sextet with Mike DiRubbo and John Ellis.

Friday and Saturday feature Melissa Aldana with Francisco Mela on drums.

Francisco Mela is one fantastic drummer.

Last night I was frustrated by a shaky audio feed for the first set, until George Garzone joined Melissa Aldana's trio, then it cleared up. I enjoyed his playing, but the last two songs of the second set, back with the trio were the killer performances of the evening.

The upcoming week looks strong:

Monday night has Ari Hoenig, featuring Shai Maestro on piano.

Tuesday night features Logan Richardson, who reappears as a sideman on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday night features Noah Preminger, with Frank Kimbrough.

Friday and Saturday, Freddie Redd appears.

Friday night, Don Friedman also appears as a sideman immediately before Freddie Redd, and the late night set on Saturday is Stacey Dillard's Brooklyn Circle.

Jim Hall: humility, patience, beauty, silence, sound, wisdom, commitment, kindness, humor, courage, respect, friendship, inspiration.
Thank you, Jim Hall.
And for those of us performing tonight, including myself...Let's play fewer notes. Let's play something meaningful, not something stale and preconceived. Let's take chances. Let's be willing to fail. Let's listen to our bandmates. Give them space. When we play a melody, let's play it as beautifully as we can. Let's play softer, and think about our sound. Let's leave space. Let's be creative. Let's think about giving, not taking. Let's make music.
Let's be more like Jim Hall.
