randyhersom Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 The way you play is name an artist who recorded with Satchmo, then an artist who recorded with the previous artist, until you reach your target name. You can post just names, but if challenged, be prepared to name the recording. I can do Satchmo to Sun Ra in six steps two different ways, and Satchmo to Cecil Taylor in four. In both cases I'm counting both beginning and ending steps. After you solve, post a new challenge for the rest of us. Quote
couw Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 didn't James Spaulding play flute on that Louis Armstrong & His Friends album? ergo: from 1. Satchmo to 2. Spaulding to 3. Sun Ra Quote
couw Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 1. Satchmo 2. Benny Goodman (1947 all star recording) 3. Henry Grimes 4. Cecil Taylor Quote
couw Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 does it have to be Satchmo we start with? otherwise: Lester Young to Harry Belafonte in 5 steps Quote
mikeweil Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 Duke Ellington to Cecil Taylor in 3 steps (that's an easy one!). Quote
couw Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 Duke Ellington to Cecil Taylor in 3 steps (that's an easy one!). read the rules, you have to solve my riddle first! Quote
medjuck Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 does it have to be Satchmo we start with? otherwise: Lester Young to Harry Belafonte in 5 steps 1.Prez 2.Prez and Ben Webster on The Sound of Jazz. 2. Ben Webster on 2 cuts of Belafonte Sings the Blues. Actually I'm not sure of that and don't have a copy of the record but as I remember it Ben Webster and Roy Eldridge play on 2 cuts. But maybe it's just another of those acid flashbacks. Quote
randyhersom Posted February 9, 2004 Author Report Posted February 9, 2004 (edited) My google says it's What A Wonderful World that Spaulding plays on. Thats a very powerful fact in this game. Much of the Blue Note roster also in three or four steps. Max Roach is the link for mikeweil's quiz. I think its OK to post interesting quizzes even if you don't have a solution for an unsolved one. Keeps the thread going. Satchmo to Charles Gayle in five. Edited February 9, 2004 by randyhersom Quote

RDK Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 This one should link Pops with lot o' cats. It's also the closest you'll get to linking Armstrong with Pharoah Sanders (well, sort of)! Quote
medjuck Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 And of course you can always go Prez & Lady Day Lady Day & Tony Scott Tony Scott & Belafonte (I am sure of this one). But when did Maynard Ferguson play with Belafonte? Quote
couw Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 ferguson - belafonte: island in the sun box set (bear family) Quote
randyhersom Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 Satchmo to ... Pharaoh Sanders in 4 Keith Jarrett, Art Pepper, Emily Remler and Larry Young, each in 5 Hank Garland and Ralph Towner, each in 6 Quote
randyhersom Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 You can also link Duke to Cecil through 'Trane. Quote
randyhersom Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 Charlie Parker to Bob Dylan in 4! Quote
Spontooneous Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Let's see, Bird to Dylan in 4 ... Bird > Miles > Harvey Brooks > Dylan. Is that the connection you were thinking of? You realize, of course, that this means Bird to "Dueling Banjos" in 5. But back to Satchel business. Using that certain Mr. Coleman who vocalizes on the Flying Dutchman album, any number of links are possible. You said Pops to Pharoah in 4; how 'bout in 3? Pops > Ornette > Pharoah. ("Chappaqua Suite" never gets its propers.) Also, Pops > Ornette > Elvin > Art Pepper. This is fun. But the Ornette connection makes it too easy. How many have heard the airchecks of Dexter Gordon in Pops' band? "Take it, brother Dexter..." OK, a new one: Quickest route from Pops to David Murray, anyone? Quote
brownie Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 (edited) Satchmo to ... Pharaoh Sanders in 4 Satchmo to Benny Goodman (A Song Is Born) Benny Goodman to Henry Grimes Henry Grimes to Pharoah Sanders Now how about Satchmo to Albert Ayler in 3 (via a different route from Satchmo/Pharoah)?
