Larry Kart Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 Picked up a used copy on LP a while ago and discovered that it not only had some fine DeFranco (as I expected), but also (not being much of a Gibbs fan) something I didn’t expect — a delightfully lucid, long-lined solo from Gibbs on “Yardbird Suite.” Quote
gmonahan Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 It's a great record. I think a lot of people really rose to the occasion when they played with DeFranco. My sense is that he could be pretty intimidating as a player. gregmo Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) No doubt Terry Gibbs felt comfortable with Buddy deFranco and played accordingly but Terry Gibbs IMHO was(is?) a superior vibes jazzman in his own right all the time. One of my favorites on that instrument. Edited March 23, 2015 by Big Beat Steve Quote
jazzbo Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I'll second that, Gibbs was a master. This is a great release. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I too have always enjoyed Gibbs playing. His series of Dream Band albums on Contemporary are marvelous. Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 I too have always enjoyed Gibbs playing. His series of Dream Band albums on Contemporary are marvelous. I'm a fan of the Dream Band but often have felt that Gibbs' own playing is too licks-oriented. That's why that solo on "Yardbird Suite" struck me; it was made up of long, lucid melodies, not hot licks. Quote
Clunky Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Terry Gibbs Quartet feat. Terry Pollard ----(emarcy) is a very strong release ( his debut ?) with Pollard heard to good advantage. Strong swinging stuff, Quote
