sonnymax Posted December 31, 2015 Report Posted December 31, 2015 I think you're right. I believe the photo was taken at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. Quote
bluenoter Posted December 31, 2015 Report Posted December 31, 2015 (edited) Kenny Burrell, at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival — Confirmed by my usual know-nothing method: Googling it. Of course, you might want to watch more of this YouTube video, "Trumpet and Guitar Workshop - Full Concert - 07/02/66 - Newport Jazz Festival," but they're introduced at this point: https://youtu.be/idnUh8-huWw?t=38m2s (First a bit about Dizzy, then "with the very capable help of Kenny Burrell." And they sound great, IMO.) My guess is that the photo in #1 is a screenshot from that video. Edited December 31, 2015 by bluenoter Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 31, 2015 Author Report Posted December 31, 2015 Thanks. I didn't know where or when this photo was taken. Quote
fasstrack Posted December 31, 2015 Report Posted December 31, 2015 Kenny Burrell's association with Diz , at least on recording, goes back to around '53. He was one of Gillespie's early 'students'---along with Milt Jackson. Quote

robertoart Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) As for the 'guitar workshop' part of this concert, it appears only George Benson doing CC Rider and a couple of Charlie Byrd tunes survive on film. The audio of one tune each by Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Attila Zola and George Benson with his classic Columbia era band are out there in the Public Domain. I hope one day I am proved wrong. He was also hilarious, and musicians and his friends have a million stories about his malapropisms, etc. He was going out and hearing music every night almost up till the day he died. The last time I saw Attila was outside Arturo's in NYC. His skin was tight and leathery and he had trouble and pain sitting down. We saw each other, embraced, then went inside to listen. Two weeks later he was gone. I think he went to Hungary or elsewhere in Europe to record a final CD in the last year of his life. Don't know what it's called, though. Quote

You didn't have to go any further than Organissimo http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/68498-grant-green-kenny-burrell-live-newport-1966/ Quote

But I was zeroing in on just a couple of questions, and Google is easier for me to search than Organissimo. Edited January 8, 2016 by bluenoter Quote
