Chuck Nessa Posted July 16, 2018 Report Posted July 16, 2018 Back in the late '70s I was doing work for HNH Records in Evanston. Among other things, I was sort of a quality control person and this recording of the Scherzi caused endless mastering problems. As a result I listened to every note, hour after hour. End result is I believe the recording is a singular masterful interpretation of the 4 works. I am grateful for the trouble it took. Quote

Alexander Hawkins Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I love Weissenberg...it goes without saying there's some magic here, but there's also some pretty cavalier stuff (albeit in a very exciting way) in the Schumann Symphonic Etudes! Quote

Lovely performances from the early 80`s .... but have to confess believing that Weissenberg`s forte is Bach .... Edited July 17, 2018 by soulpope Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Yes the Bach is really great here... Quote

Alexander Hawkins Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 Similarly - I have no problem with the sound, on either volume. Quote

mikeweil Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 Very nice - and a good example that you play what you see and hear in the music. This makes audible just how much late 18th cenrury "classical" composers owe to early 18th century Italian music. Quote
soulpope Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 A formidable ensemble which fortunately was recorded recurringly .... these recording from 1963 (Beethoven) and 1965 (Mozart + Smetana) documents their supremacy both in the well known and how to evolve a minor euvre like Smetana "From My Life" into a gem ....
