Ron S Posted June 12, 2023 Report Posted June 12, 2023 (edited) Just finished listening to a fascinating CD of relatively obscure Copland music written for: (1) a puppet show at the 1939 NY World's Fair ("From Sorcery to Science); (2) a documentary film shown at the 1939 NY World's Fair ("The City (Suite)"); (3) a WWII documentary about the resettlement of refugees in the US ("The Cummington Story (Suite, Arr. Sheffer)"); and (4) a WWII Hollywood film about Ukrainians fighting Nazi invaders ("The North Star (Suite)"), which seems relevant right now. HutchFan Posted June 14, 2023 Report Posted June 14, 2023 Now playing: As far as I'm concerned, Netania Davrath "owns" Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne. It's a perfect pairing. No other singer even comes close. Earlier: Quote

I have pieces sung by her on the following Bach Guild (Vanguard) releases: Big Beethoven Box, Big Baroque Box Volume 4, Big Schubert Box, Big Haydn Box, and Big Jewish Music Box. Quote

It's unstudied (in the best sense) and natural. Not at all "operatic." Have you heard Davrath's rendition of Mahler's Fourth -- with Abravanel & the Utah SO? It's amazing, another perfect pairing of artist and repertoire. Quote
