Now on my turntable:

Shostakovich's Fourteenth Symphony is song cycle based on the theme of death.  So, as you might expect, it's dark, dark, dark.  But the music is more than unrelenting gloom.  At times, it's even beautiful.

This 1973 recording by Mstislav Rostropovich (conductor), Galina Vishnevskya (soprano), and Mark Reshetin (bass) is something special.
