I saw Malle's Zazie Dans le Metro on the big screen last night.  I'd seen clips before but never the whole thing.  So wild.  Almost too much, though it is surprisingly faithful to the book.  I would describe the film as Tati on crack.  Someone else said imagine if Looney Tunes were real, which also seems apt.

I am actually contemplating seeing Barbie, just to see if it's the inspired pop-culture tweaking that all the hype is trying to say that it is. Willing to go to a bargain matinee to find out, maybe.

But Oppenheimer... There was a cycle of documentaries and such a few decades ago that I paid attention to. Not sure what Hollywood is going to do to improve on that.

As Chuck Berry wrote and sang, "C'est la vie," say the old folks, "it goes to show you never can tell".  I was so excited when Oppenheimer was coming out.  Saw it twice on Prime (a second time to see if I was wrong the first time) and found it to be a weird, disturbing, pretentious mess with wooden acting.  'Interstellar' is one of my favorite movies, but otherwise Christopher Nolan's stuff is lost on me, no matter how popular and acclaimed it is otherwise.

I had no intention of seeing Barbie when it came out, even with the surprisingly positive reviews, but recent watching has led me deep into Noah Baumbach's movies and therefore into Greta Gerwig's, and I love their work (especially Mistress Liberty, though I still have other titles such as Frances Ha and Lady Bird to see).  They speak strongly to me.  So I picked up Barbie, my wife and I watched it, and we found it to be pretty great.  We were hooked from the iconic opening scene.  Gerwig is communicating important insights in an engaging manner (Her Little Women did the same, also a surprisingy great movie, which this led us to seek out).  Every American adult should listen to America Ferrera's monologue in Barbie about the existential challenges faced by American women.

So both of the 2023 BarbieHeimer summer blockbusters ended up surprising me, in very different ways.  I realize YMMV greatly, and that's OK.

Oppenheimer was a slog for me. Everything was drowned in dialogue and Goransson's score, with times when the music overwhelmed everything else. Maybe the score is great as a stand alone listen? The scene with Gary Oldman as Harry Truman is what stands out and lingers in my mind the most, but not a movie I would ever want to sit through again. I'd welcome the documentary mentioned above.
