I have the 2002 "Atlantic Masters" issued by Warner. I think it's based on the 1999 Rhino release. I don't like the sound of the horns - they sound harsh to me. I don't know if it's due to the original recording, the mastering or maybe my system. If it's a Warner CD that sounds harsh, then it must be the mastering. The Japanese mono CD from a few years back was incredibly bright (and loud). Are you familiar with the 2 CDs worth of alternate and incomplete takes that are available in the trading community? The disc is not particularly loud. I can comfortably put the volume dial at nine o'clock. I believe the earlier US disc had some extreme stereo separation issues and the recent Japanese mono disc I used to own has boosted highs and so must sound even harsher and probably louder. Quote
