Zbigniew Seifert - Man of the Light (MPS, 1977)
Zbigniew Seifert (vn); Joachim Kühn (p); Jasper Van't Hof (el p, org); Cecil McBee (b); Billy Hart (d)

I like this. It's big, thrusting, earthy music -- a bit reminiscent of McCoy Tyner.

Because today just seemed to need some Mahalia Jackson.  This concert, recorded at Lincoln Center on Easter Sunday, 1967, answered that need nicely.  There may indeed be a balm in Gilead, but her singing is a balm in itself.

Jim Hall, Joe Lovano, George Mraz, Lewis Nash - Grand Slam: Live at the Regattabar (Telarc)
Superb.  At times, this music reminds me a bit of Jimmy Giuffre's trio with Hall -- especially when Lovano picks up his clarinet.  But I think Nash's presence makes this music swing even harder.

Bill O'Connell - Searching (Inner City, 1978)
I recently tracked down this out-of-print LP, O'Connell's first as a leader. Unlike much of his music, this is not Latin Jazz. (O'Connell was in Mongo Santamaria's band when this LP was made.) Instead, this is lyrical, straight-ahead jazz in a piano trio format. It's lovely and subtle music; the more I listen, the more I enjoy it.
