More Desmond from the 70`s .... desert island recording ....

I've found the other material from this session to be more stimulating, sometimes very much so. I'd love to have insight into what drove the original selection process.

But yeah, Desmond.

For me just to the contrary - the "Live" tracks are more on the extroverted side, whereas the "Paul Desmond" material strikes me as being sublime .... different strokes I guess but great to have the material available anyway ....

Edited to say - I've been a little late in really appreciating McShann. People would talk about his greatness and I would kind of ignore them, but recently I've come to realize just how great he really was. His playing gives life and lift and sparkle to every session he's on.

Pure gold.

IMHO, Al Cohn was at his very best while he was making records for Xanadu in the latter half of the Seventies.

Eric Dolphy - Stockholm Sessions (Enja)

Ellington/Mingus/Roach - Money Jungle (BN, 2002 edition). I somewhat eccentrically listened to just the tracks that weren't on the original LP. It made a pretty good alternate version.

Art Tatum - The Best of the Complete Pablo Solo Masterpieces (Pablo). I have the "group masterpieces" box set, but with all the other solo Tatum I have, I feel like this is all I need of the solo box.

That would make a great night's listening, Jeff.
