The sound is decent if not spectacular. They played a particularly lively version of "Struttin'" on the second broadcast included on Disc 1 and Billy Kyle had a nice feature on "Blue Moon". I like that set. Quote

HutchFan Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Mickey Tucker - Mister Mysterious (Muse, 1979) Listening to this music, the first thing I notice: Cecil McBee is a badass. Phew!!! I dig. ... And not just McBee. The whole band is superb, and this is an excellent record. 46 minutes ago, soulpope said: JackieMac on Blue Note = Great Music. Quote

I've not heard Origami Harvest, but I've enjoyed Akinmusire's other records. It's an interesting record--I had to go after the first three tracks and am just now getting back to tracks 4-6. Kool A.D.'s raps are hit-and-miss for me on it (there's one particular sexual refrain that seems gratuitous and that I could really do without) and I wish that there was more of Akinmusire's trumpet (I, too, am a fan), but I like the blend of string quartet and trumpet and (when they work) the vocal parts. More a showcase for Akinmusire as a composer than anything else. Edited January 11, 2019 by ghost of miles Quote
