Paul Barnes and his Polo Players (American Music). Paul "Polo" Barnes recorded some excellent work with King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and Oscar Celestin's Tuxedo Orchestra in the 1920s. This is a 1960 quartet session (originally recorded for the Icon label), expanded to a quintet on a few selections by the addition of the brilliant Captain John Handy on alto sax. (Not the same John Handy who recorded with Mingus.) This won't be to everyone's taste - Polo's clarinet sound is plain, a little reedy, and unlike anyone else's, except for maybe his brother Emile's. The music is simple, but not primitive. Like much New Orleans music, it's unselfconscious, melodic, and pop/dance music as much as it is jazz. I find it lovely.

Your review makes it look interesting, Jeff

Afro Horn, MX (AACE)

Nice!  I saw a good chunk of Afro Horn's set at the Detroit Jazz Fest years ago and enjoyed it a lot.  I believe the lineup was JD Allen, Alex Harding, Aruan Ortiz, Rashaan Carter, Francisco Mora Catlett and Roman Diaz.

Same line up on this excellent CD recorded in 2011, plus Vincent Bowen on tenor sax.

Disc 2 of 15.  on the plus side on this disc, Hank Williams performs good renditions of "Move It On Over", "Nobody's Lonesome For Me" and "I Saw The Light".  On the final show here, though, we truly have an example of the sublime meeting the ridiculous -- the sublime being Hank's versions of "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and ""I've Just Told Mama Goodbye" (and who really needed to hear that depressing song at 7:15 AM, the time these transcription programs were aired?).  Those two fine tracks bookend Miss Audrey's version of "Bonaparte's Retreat".  It took me a while, but I finally got the joke.  This whole "Miss Audrey" thing was merely a ruse, a mask behind which hid the unmistakable vocal stylings of the great Darlene Edwards.  Listen and compare
