Seems like Bill Evans-philes don't talk about this record much, but I think this pairing of Evans and Manne works wonderfully.

I do too, and I really like the McFarland session as well.

I think the  Evans-philes' problem with "Empathy" is that they feel that RVG's usual close-in way of mic-ing the piano significantly distorted Evans' touch. See p. 136-7 of Peter Pettinger's Evans biography "How My Heart Sings" for details and opinion on this.

I suppose that makes sense. It's not a "typical Bill Evans" sound, for sure.

If you like that one, try the one with Mayte Martín ("Free Boleros", recorded at the Grec festival in Barcelona, 1996), as well as the "Temas latinoamericanos" and "Temas Brasileños" Ensayo cds.

Really a treasure from the last year, one of the great discoveries:

Dizzy with Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Ray Brown and Philly Joe Jones, a really great set of live Music.
