A few years ago in Southport, UK I saw Basile, Patton and Karn in a sextet that included tenorman Osian Roberts who, like me, was born in Cardiff. I see that this album has a track called "The Cardiff Giant". As I'm listening on Spotify and don't have access to liner notes, I'm wondering if this is dedicated to Osian. Is it? Quote

Justin V Posted September 10, 2020 Report Posted September 10, 2020 The Tenor Madness session. I bought this a year ago and haven't spent a ton of time with it, which is my loss. Listening to each session just makes me fall in love with Sonny all over again. I'll binge on the RCA box by session soon. Quote
EKE BBB Posted September 10, 2020 Report Posted September 10, 2020 Both LPs and the Vega EP were gathered together in the FSR CD “Piano Jazz. Trio Sessions”, under Maurice Vander’s name. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 10, 2020 Report Posted September 10, 2020 James Newton "The African Flower" Blue Note cd This is so good. . . it really should have an audiophile SACD/cd and LP release. Quote
Justin V Posted September 10, 2020 Report Posted September 10, 2020 The Soul Junction/All Mornin' Long session. Listening to Tenor Madness led me to this. It's interesting that Jamil Nasser is on this one instead of Paul Chambers. Nasser was an excellent bassist. Quote

Thanks John. I had a nice chat with Osian at the home of my friend Malcolm who hosts gigs and we compared notes on our early origins. (Sadly I'm now resigned to accepting those face-to-face sessions as a thing of the past ) Osian is a tenorman much to my taste, and I think yours. He can be heard to advantage on a number of albums he's made with Steve Fishwick, this probably being the most well known: Quote
sidewinder Posted September 10, 2020 Report Posted September 10, 2020 I recall seeing Basile heading up a reconstituted Slide Hampton Octet on a Smalls ‘livestream’ a while back. Impressive ! 4 hours ago, John Tapscott said: Yes Bill it is - quote - "a bright and breezy 32 bar tune dedicated to his (Frank's) dear friend and great tenor saxophonist Osian Roberts." Now: An excellent reissue - I picked up the vinyl. Good sleeve notes by all concerned too. Quote
