I always think of that one as an incredibly unlikely gig/venue - bit of a miracle really. The 2CD reissue is very good.

Unfortunately it is missing 2 tracks that were issued on anthologies - Sweet and Lovely (10:32) and Not Just To Be In Love Again (7:17)

Great version of "Milestones" with smoking Frank Strozier solo work ....

Whoa, Strozier with a big band!  Sign me up.

Now playing:

For Hawes-led sessions, I only have this, For Real! and a short session from a Savoy compilation.  I need to pick up more because he was a brilliant pianist.  Given my love for Roy Haynes and Cecil McBee, the Jazz Showcase album would be a logical choice.

Thanks - that’s too bad.

Fascinating music near the end of his career ....

I agree with soulpope.  Both volumes are outstanding. :tup

The only downside is less than ideal audio fidelity.

This trio was great and I saw them for the first time in autumn 1977 at "Jazz by Freddie" in Vienna. It must have been a gig shortly before the LP was recorded. The next year in April 1978 this trio played with Johnny Griffin at the same venue.

Was that company a brothel doubling as a jazz record label?

Well we know it wasn't a porn production company - the naughty bits would be pixelated.

The album on Black Lion is a strong favorite, but I may slightly prefer this one on MPS/SABA. The 3 early albums on Contemporary are certainly very good, but I find he digs in a bit deeper on the Black Lion and MPS sessions.iu.jpeg

Ok and thanks for the Info.

I am not a complementist for Hampton Hawes and have concentrated on his Contemporary recordings as far as I could get them in mint or N- condition.

These are here and should do it.

Brothels and jazz? I've never heard of such a thing!
