romualdo
Cheers for posting the link - what an erudite person he was. Fishing (I knew about) but not the weightlifting. Favourite author was Edgar Alan Poe. Interview was recorded in 65 (during the Stockholm Jazz Festival) & he moved to Europe in 46 - his accent over the 20 years had developed into a very continental one. Fascinating 20 minutes of Don Carlos. Love his music!!
JSngry
That club date recording is wonderful!
clifford_thornton
yeah, I need to go back and give that one a concentrated spin.
Caravan
Are you guys referring to the "unidentified live performance" that comes right after the Bob LaPlante interview? That's not Byas, but - guess what - unidentified performers.
JSngry
Yes, I was, and wow, that explains why I thought it interesting that Don Byas had acquired some kind of Gene Ammons influence! Benny Golson, maybe? Or, what European player was working in that style? It's not consistently Jug-ish, but there are several touches that speak out. JSngry
Ok, definitely not Golson, never mind. But somebody's listened to a LOT of Jug. And to their credit they didn't try to match the bigness of his sound, but went for the concurrent lightness within it.
Caravan
I suspect the culprits are European. In fact, as soon as I heard the drummer, I thought "Europe". The garnerish pianist that comes after it is - towards the end - identified as Danish, with German bass and drums.
clifford_thornton
Interesting, okay -- yeah I just caught a few seconds of it and hadn't gone back to give it a spin. Thanks.
