brownie Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 If the report that Mosaic is planning a Benny Goodman Columbia set is accurate, how about having Mosaic do the Count Basie Columbia box? I already have the material but would love to have it done with improved sound by Mosaic. Mosaic knows how to do it the right way... Quote
Philip Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 No disagreement from me! Might have to wait until the (selective) Basie set on Sony is nearer to deletion, altough that set is probaly aimed at a slightly different market; the "History of Art Blakey" Blue Note set came out around the time of the 1960 Messengers Mosaic for instance. king ubu Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 I guess that would be a dream-come-true for quite a few of us, brownie! I'd buy it, for sure! ubu Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 There's been discussion of this possibility before... I once queried Mosaic about the Basie & Ellington Columbia holdings and got a reply from MC himself, saying they'd like to do it, but that Sony was still holding off on giving them the "marquee artists ." (Basie, Duke, Billie Holiday & Armstrong were the artists to which he was referring--this was before Sony's LADY DAY set came out.) Maybe the Goodman is a sign of good things to come. Quote
LAL Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 I'm all for the Basie set. However, with the Duke, only pre-50s material should be made into a set since so many 50s albums are now being reissued. Quote
brownie Posted March 7, 2004 Author Report Posted March 7, 2004 I'm all for the Basie set. However, with the Duke, only pre-50s material should be made into a set since so many 50s albums are now being reissued. The only post-50 Columbia Basie album I know is the Ellington-Basie First Time one and this has been properly reissued. Now let's have Mosaic work out an arrangement with Columbia to reissue ALL the pre-195O sides. There are treasures a plenty there... Quote
jazzbo Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Brownie, wasn't there also a Basie-Bennett? I only ever saw that as a gold cd and passed it by. . . . Quote
brownie Posted March 8, 2004 Author Report Posted March 8, 2004 Yes, Lon! There was the 'In Person' album by Tony Bennett with the Count Basie band in 1959. This was an exchange deal with Roulette where there was a second Bennett-Basie album released. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Thanks, I figured it was an exchange deal. Going to have to look for that one one day soon. Quote
