Hardbopjazz Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 (edited) I was reading something on Phil Woods. He was paid 50 dollars for his sax playing on Billy Joel's super hit "Just the way you are." I bet he wished he would have asked for more money. His solo is always copied when someone covers that tune. Anyone know of any other artists that have been under paid for their work? Edited March 18, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
jazzbo Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 SURELY that is a rhetorical question? Quote
wesbed Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 (edited) I wonder how much they paid Hank Mobley for Soul Station? That one is priceless. Hardbopjazz, I know this wasn't the point of your post. However, I am enjoying being a smartass right about now. Edited March 18, 2004 by wesbed Quote
PHILLYQ Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Don't even know the guy's name, but I heard that the guy who played the guitar solo on Steely Dan's 'Reelin' in the Years' got $90. Quote
Sundog Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Skunk Baxter, wasn't it? I believe it was actually Elliot Randall. The "Skunk" is all over that album. However, I believe his main contributions are on pedal steel guitar. Quote
Johnny E Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 SURELY that is a rhetorical question? Ain't it the truth! Quote
doubleM Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 I always thought that Hugh McCracken played that solo. But WTF, I could be wrong!??! Quote
frank m Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 Billie Holiday was paid a ridiculously low amount for all her early recordings, with no residual rights. She got not one additional cent for all those classic records. this happened to lots of the early jazz musicians, most particularly count Basie, who was royally screwed in his first contract. Quote
BruceH Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Didn't Phil Woods also play the sax on Steely Dan's "Dr. Wu"? Quote
Sundog Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Didn't Phil Woods also play the sax on Steely Dan's "Dr. Wu"? Yep. I wonder how much he got paid? Jerome Richardson plays tenor on Can't Buy A Thrill's Dirty Work. Good stuff. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 23, 2004 Author Report Posted March 23, 2004 Maybe there is a scale wage someone gets for studio work. I would hhope it would be more then $50 or $90 dollars for a few hours of work. Quote
sheldonm Posted March 24, 2004 Report Posted March 24, 2004 Hell....I'd pay them more than that to stop by my house and play a solo for me B) ! Mark Quote
