mikeweil
Pianist Mark Levine (October 4, 1938 – January 27, 2022) had developped into one of California's best Latin Jazz pianists - he was in Cal Tjader's band until the latter's death in 1982. He wrote three praised piano books. Among the many recordings that are memorable is Joe Henderson's Canyon Lady for Milestone, but his albums with his own band The Latin Tinge on his label Left Coast Clave are worth checking out, too. mikeweil
Mercury News Obituary Michael Spiro is quoted there: “One could legitimately argue that Mark Levine was the truest Latin jazz artist of our time (with all due respect of course to the fellas from Fort Apache, Chucho, etc.),” Spiro posted on Facebook. “He didn’t just play standards in clave (an Afro-Cuban rhythm), or music with instrumental solos over a few chords in clave, he played seriously harmonically complex tunes in clave. He didn’t just re-harmonize standards, he played modern jazz in clave … .”
mhatta
RIP. Mark Levine played trombone on Houston Person's debut "Underground Soul!". The organ is played by a mysterious organist "Charles Boston". I suspect that this is actually the nom de plume of Levine (he attended Boston University, there is Charles River...) and organ or trombone might have been overdubbed (since trombone and organ sometimes sounds simultaneously). I'm not sure such was technically possible in 1966. Edited February 9, 2022 by mhatta
