Teasing the Korean Posted June 24, 2023 Report Posted June 24, 2023 (edited) Finally getting around to a project I've wanted to do for a long time: Taking the Billie Holiday Verve box set - the rusty lunchbox with hideous artwork and accordion CD tray - and re-sequencing the tracks into playlists recreating the original Clef/Norgran albums. Now listening to the first: Billie Holiday Sings. I did the same with the Shearing Quintet MGM albums, using the complete quintet box set. Edited June 24, 2023 by Teasing the Korean Quote
JSngry Posted June 24, 2023 Report Posted June 24, 2023 Are the outcomes better or just different? Quote

Not really sure yet, as this first 12" LP represents the first 12 tracks she recorded. The 10" sequence was a little different. I have several of these on LP, and those were the sequences I was used to, much like the Shearing MGM LPs. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 24, 2023 Author Report Posted June 24, 2023 It seems that the early 12" releases attempted to come close to the session order. The 10" albums seemed to be more carefully curated (or randomly sequenced in a way that worked). Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted June 24, 2023 Report Posted June 24, 2023 I also make playlists of the original albums with most of my box sets. I love these big sets but I find them easier to digest in album-sized meals. Albums often undergo versions, expansions, combinations, etc so divvying the set up into albums is often quite a challenging job! Sometimes I don't bother about the albums and just pay attention to the discrete sessions. Quote

Sometimes I don't bother about the albums and just pay attention to the discrete sessions. I hear you. In Billie's case, her first three 10" albums (24 tracks total) were combined into two 12" albums, the latter of which represent the first 24 tracks she recorded in order. On the 10" albums, they programmed sequences. So I'm going the 10" route to see how they play. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 24, 2023 Author Report Posted June 24, 2023 (edited) So I created playlists for 10 LPs, using the 10" versions of the first three. It all adds up to 92 tunes, and there are 100 on the box set. Who knows how long it will take me to find the other 8! Edited June 25, 2023 by Teasing the Korean Quote
gmonahan Posted July 16, 2023 Report Posted July 16, 2023 I did something like that with the Sinatra Reprise box, but in that case, I just printed out the original album orders and carefully taped them on the individual sleeves, so I could put the individual cd in and listen to the part I wanted in album order. In fact, I listened to the album "She Shot Me Down" just this morning doing that! Quote
