Bit the bullet today and ordered something I've been salivating over for a few weeks: "Complete Bud Powell on Verve" It's a high quality set with a great booklet and insight to Bud's playing and mental health at that time. While its not one I pull out that often due to the all of the false starts and aborted takes there is a lot of great music on it (disc 1 is particularly impressive) but I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to Bud as there is lot of tunes where Bud is not at his best as pointed out in the booklet and how it affected his playing. Judging from the write-ups, I knew it was going to be a warts-and-all set. But I'm sort of at the stage with Powell where I want to listen to the warts, so to speak, as well as the inspired playing. It's a Lester Young day for me today as well. In the mailbox today: Complete Savoy Recordings Ordered today because I need to compliment vol. 1 and I found a new/sealed copy dirt cheap: A Fine Romance, Vol. 2 I think I have a lot of this stuff elsewhere but it's nice to have it all together. It has most or all of their Columbia stuff and a few odds and ends. Certainly the first part of the title is a joke, but there's some great stuff here. Also got some Yo La Tengo... jazzydaddy Posted September 3, 2009 Report Share Posted September 3, 2009 YES, this is one of my all time favorite Maynard albums. Issued in the mid-1960's on the short-lived Mainstream label. It was originally issued on LP under the title "Color Him Wild". There is something about this album that keeps me coming back; I think it is the nice balance/mix of material. Not only does he show off his inimitable solo chops on tunes like "Airegin" but there is a great version of "Three More Foxes" here that fascinated me back when I was a young trumpeter in highschool. However I think it is the warm ballad artistry of the sax section (Lanny Morgan, Willie Maiden, Ronnie Cuber) on Maiden's composition "Tinsel" and the easy going loper "This Night" that really sunk in and hooked me. It is a real shame that this album has not been more widely available during the CD era. Hopefully it will see new light in the download era. I was able to nab a used CD copy in it's reincarnation as "Dues" sometime ago. Don't let this one pass you by!!!
