Emanem label - any movement on website & orders

Anyone know if there has been any movement on recommencing Martin's site - it's almost 2 years since he sadly passed (time flies!!)

This web site is no longer accepting new orders.

We are sorry to inform you that Martin passed away in early December 2023.

We are doing our best to contact anyone with outstanding orders and either post or refund them.

We hope to transfer the CD stock so it is available again, but this will take time to organise.

If you knew Martin, or the records and CDs he helped put out, please celebrate his life and love of music. He will be missed greatly.

Nothing that I've heard. I'd really like to know what the status of the inventory is, or if anyone has even inquired about taking it over. Seems most likely that if someone did it would be nearby in Europe. I sure do miss the days of being able to order discounted discs from him and have them arrive quickly and cheaply.

I am enoying the hell out of those Steve Lacy compilations. Emanem wasn't on my musical radar when Martin was still around.

The Lacy catalogue was probably the crown jewels of the Emanem label - scooped up all of his releases over the years

Lacy, Rutherford, Stevens, Parker, Bailey. I think those artists were perfectly documented by Martin's efforts, though certainly there were a lot of others who benefited from his keen ear and dedication.

I was glad to have a few nice communications with him over the years, and he participated in the WPI Jazz Institute zoom roundtables occasionally as well.

As for the stock/catalogue, my assumption is that his surviving partner is sorting through grief and logistics as best she can. As I recall she is older and this is probably quite challenging for her. I have no intel, but can only assume this is the case. There are a few Emanem CDs I never picked up and would like to. Hopefully they find a way over here eventually (de minimis cancellations be damned!).

The big name stuff is important work, but there's also so many more obscure titles worth investigating that really provide a snapshot of free improvisation at a point in time. And he was generous enough to discount these titles to very low prices to where you could investigate a lot of stuff you may not have had the mettle for at full price.

A whole other can of worms there, but it's something I've often wished other prolific labels in this space might do with their back catalogs as well.

yes, agreed. Without those bigger names selling at a decent pace, we wouldn't have had three CDs worth of People Band, Inaudible Collectif, George Khan archival material, Charlotte Hug, Sylvia Hallett, a particularly hairy solo Fred Lonberg-Holm CD, or any number of other things.
