In the recording studio

Hello friends, 

I´m glad I have quite a busy time as a musician. 

Last weekend I took my band, augmented by a great female singer (Lili Mae) and the great percussionist Andi Steirer to the recording studio for our next album. 

It was just wonderful to work with those fantastic musicians, and though we had a lot of work (12 tunes in 2 days), we also had a lotta fun and a great time. 

The singer did 6 tunes with us and she wrote great lyrics to my compositon "Tune for Pharoah". The other vocal tracks are standards like Round Midnight, Moanin´ (with some astonishing scatting by Lili, doing 4´s with the horn players), a very fast version of "I got my love to keep me warm", and one of my favourite ballads (The Nearness of You). 

Besides "Tune for Pharoah" I had written 6 other originals, one as a feature for my bass player. There will be also some heavy funk stuff, where the drummer and percussionist really did a wonderful job. 

My visual artist and fotografer Lilia Kirilova made a lot of session fotos. 

Now I can´t wait to hear the masters. The album will be out early next year as CD as well as double vinyl. 

Until now, this is a great year for me musically.

I must say honestly, I dunno. That´s the record company that decides it I think. On Spotify it will be, I´m sure.

I'll be on the lookout! Via Bandcamp there's options to purchase unlike Spotify.

I got the test pressings of the vinyls last week and it sounds great !

Album will be out in the middle of february, also will be a video on youtube and social media which we did today in the studio of the record company 😄

Hi !

I can announce you that I take my band again into the studio on october 3th. We´ll do our third album. 

This time not a double vinyl, just one normal vinyl, and for those who want, also CD, but vinyl sells better among jazz buffs nowadays. 

The third album of course has the same personnel: my female singer, she did her debut on "Simmering" my last album and since then is a fix member of my band, then of course the two horns, me on piano, bass, drums and percussion, the very best guys I have in my band. 

This time it will be only originals, no standards ! And from the 6 pieces 4 are vocal, only two is instrumental. The singer wrote all the lyrics to my compositions. 
Oh, there will also be a very short 7th piece, something that I never did and you don´t hear often on jazz combo records: It´s just voice and piano. What we call in România "o romanță” (a romance), or a serenade .......will be a premiere. 

I also like to mention, that from the 7 tunes 3 are based on some sponanuous played things by my girlfriend Andreea. She is not a musician and did not play any instrument before she met me, but when she fingers something on the piano, it makes sense, it sounds beautiful and what I can do is just organize it to become an entire piece, get the right chords and score it for the band. Since she is not registered at the Composers Guild, they have to be under my name, but I´ll give her the royalities for those tunes. 

We just played some of it on gigs in springtime, like a kind of "rehearsal", but professional musicians we don´t need an entire rehearsal, we go in the studio, and one day will be enough for those tunes.

BTW: Since I mentioned my beloved Andreea, who is in charge for some tunes and really is the REASON for this my 3rd album with my formation.....
Since you are from Spain, from Barcelona.......she is half Spanish (father Spanish) , half Romanian (and I am full romanian), and the first 10 years of her life she lived in your city, Barcelona.

Our story sounds like a Jazz Fairytale....I spotted her in the audience when I played a gig, and thought wow, the most beautiful girl I ever seen.

And since her very original and unique way of making the piano sound reminded me of some stuff Sun Ra did, she got the nickname "Miss RA" and my compositon "Miss Ra´s Choice" from our second album is based on a piano figure she played, just exactly when I made that foto...and fitting....the Pharoah Sanders-T-Shirt 😀

Here you have a little taste from the promotion video clip the Label made when "Simmering" came out in February this year.  I am proud to have Lili in my band and here role in my musical projects will be even stronger on the forthcoming album "Scenes and Thoughts" with only 2 instrumentals and 5 vocals with her lyrics to my tunes..... 

On this videoclip I must apologize for the vacant and spent look I have on the video, but 12 o clock usually is much earlier than I get up, so it´s ironical that we perform my song with the lyrics about the "gentle hands in the silver light, whispering peace into the night" 🤣
