Any particular favorite recording/pianist? I'm presently looking at the 6-cd set with Julius Katchen on London.

My favorites include:

My current go-to recording for the late piano works, Opp. 116-119.

 

Mostly chamber works -- but the solo piano works are sublime.   

 

This is the only complete set that I own.  An excellent traversal.

 

I've never heard a better interpretation of the Balladen, Op. 10.

Hardy Rittner. So far he reclorded five volumes. Excellent sound. The pianos he plays are the types Brahms favored and are alreasy very close to modern instruments.

For the late pieces, this is my unsurpassed favourite:

The piano is a beautiful sounding early 1900's Bösendorfer.

Did any of you notice that one of the late Intermezzi is the piano music Jesse Stone plays at home during his melancholy hours? (I like that series  with Tom Selleck.)
