I'm sure SOMEONE has to have posted on this somewhere but couldn't find a thread quickly so...

Anyone see in Downbeat the listing of these two live reunions coming up at Iridium?

May 25-30: Jackie McLean, Grachan Moncur, and Bobby Hutcherson, joining up for the first time since the mid-60's.

July 13-18: the John Handy Quintet (you know, the one that recorded LIVE IN MONTEREY), with Michael White, Jerry Hahn, Don Thompson, and Terry Clarke.

HOLY SHIT! And we're not going to NYC this Spring or Summer 'cause it's too hard to travel with the little guy right now.

Anyone planning to go to these? I hope some record label is smart enough to capture these for posterity, and if not - pocket recorders, people, what do you think about DAT?

Actually there are couple of good ones this week as well. I caught one billed as called The Cookers, a Night of the Cookers reunion of sorts with Pete LaRoca and James Spaulding, both in fine form. They were joined by Craig Handy, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss and George Cables. Craig Handy was exceptional as well but Spaulding stole the show to me. He is in excellent form, an unsung hero to me. Very nice show. I might make the trek back down for the Curtis Fuller show this weekend with Louis Hayes, Wallace Roney and Javon Jackson. I'm there for the McLean thing for sure.

Any more information? Bassists? Drummers?

I was wondering. Obviously the drummer won't be Haynes, or he'd have been announced as a headliner. Will it be a drummer from that era, like Pete LaRoca or Joe Chambers, or a younger guy? I wouldn't be surprised if Ridley was on bass, but Cecil McBee would be a great choice since he recorded with all those guys too, even if he wasn't on the "big 3."

Barring some sort of disaster, I will be at both.

a few of you guys better bring your mini-disc players and record this beacuse everyone knows that everyone always bitches there are no tapes of the jackie/bobby/grachan group in the 60s so dont let the oversight happen again!!!!

Is there documentation that they did live gigs together?

I don't know whether they did any live dates together in the 60s, but I do have a copy of 30 minutes from a radio broadcast of a reunion performance the group did in 1987 in Japan along with Woody Shaw, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

I was also fortunate to see McLean and Hutcherson with Andrew Hill and Billy Higgins a few years ago at City College. A historic gathering that I doubt will ever happen again.

Think I will make the effort to get into the city for the McLean/Hutcherson/Moncur date.

If they did gigs together, those must have been very few. And dating from 1963.

I happened to catch Jackie McLean at Slug's in October 1967 shortly after he recorded the 'Bout Soul date (with Moncur and Woody Shaw) on September 8. By then, Moncur was performing full time with Archie Shepp (Roswell Rudd was also in the lineup plus Howard Johnson on tuba! an amazing band!!).

Went to Slugs twice. Each time McLean was playing with Lamont Johnson, Scott Holt and Rashied Ali)
