BeBop Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 "And Musicology may not be the only new Prince album out in the near future: Bruce Lundvall, president of Blue Note Records, says he spoke with Prince about putting out a CD of live instrumentals". News to me, anyway. Quote
JSngry Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 WELL!!!! Could be pretty interesting! Or not. I'd be willing to find out, that's for sure. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Miles once called him the Duke Ellington of our time... Quote
John B Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Miles once called him the Duke Ellington of our time... That must have been well before Prince released "Batdance." Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Miles once called him the Duke Ellington of our time... That must have been well before Prince released "Batdance." Well, Miles said a lot of things! Quote
Philip Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 In the 1980s Alfred Lion mentioned to MC that he admired Prince. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Could easily be a more interesting album than Wynton's recent BN date. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 In the 1980s Alfred Lion mentioned to MC that he admired Prince. I admire Prince...and Musicology is a sweet side! Bought it this weekend with Harris' Evolution, so I'm bringing the funk... Quote
JSngry Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Now what would be REALLY interesting is if BN would legitimately issue that bootleg of the Prince New Years Eve gig where Miles sat in. A fascinating document, that is. Sort of a nice "bookend" to the BIRDLAND 1951 side in some ways... Quote
Joe Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 It's about time BN got around to documenting the fertile Minneapolis jazz scene... Quote
chris olivarez Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Could be interesting and as they say "TO BE CONTINUED". Quote
J Larsen Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Okay, I like Prince, I like Leo Kottke, I love Van Morrison, and I'm not too offended by Norah Jones BUT... I think it's getting to the point where it's silly to call BN a jazz label anymore. Quote
Alexander Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I heard that Prince's last foray into instrumental jazz ("N.E.W.S.") was pretty horrible, so I can only hope that the Purple One would receive good advice were he to record on Blue Note. I got "Musicology" over the weekend, and while I think the title track is PHAT, I think the rest of the CD falls flat so far. Prince certainly doesn't sound as bored as he did on "Come" nor as overbearing as on "The Gold Experience" (the album that made me give up on Prince) but it's no where near as good as something like "Sign O The Times" or "The Black Album" (or the "Hits and B-Sides" greatest hits compliation for that matter). Maybe it'll grow on me, but for the moment I'm not too favorably impressed. And that packaging SUCKS! Quote
Alexander Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Could easily be a more interesting album than Wynton's recent BN date. I LIKED "The Magic Hour!" I think I'm the only person who did... Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 i am all for prince on blue note doing funk instrumentals. prob. could be the best new bn stuff since the mid 90s and MMW if you ask me. Prince is touring right now and i really want to see him. i was playing the 1999 lps all week. i also like DIRTY MIND lp from 1980. the one thing i dont get about prince tho is why is he so weird. i didnt realize that on ever lp cover of his, he is in a g-string. for such a funky dude, he really is a little weirdo!! jazzbo Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Alexander, I like The Magic Hour as well. Not sure I'd buy the Prince on BN. Quote
Shawn Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 As for Prince/Kottke/Al Green/Van Morrison, etc being released on Blue Note...I think it's pretty cool actually. Jazz or not, these are all quality artists that deserve the little bit of "prestige" that still goes with the name Blue Note. Plus, with the way jazz sells in the marketplace it's a way for Blue Note to "keep the doors open" and the sales help keep the reissues coming. Prince on Blue Note could equal quite a few RVG's is the way I look at it. Quote
