I have the 2cd Albert Ayler Quintet: Slug's Saloon that was put out by Get Back Records. I really enjoy this set, I've always thought that Donald Ayler adds such a unique sound to Aylers music, you can really hear a great combination of a very old style with a new free-style sensibility. But be warned, the sound is not that good. Hopefully, this new release will be an improvement soundwise. For a better live sound, and maybe more of a focused feel to the music, Nuits de La Fondation Maeght might be a good first buy.

This came out first on the Italian label Base. Two LPs. Sound is OK. I have not heard the later ESP CDs which include one additional track. Not the Ayler albums to start with. If you can get 'Spiritual Unity on 'Spirits Rejoice' on ESP, these are better Ayler starters. Or the Live in Greenwich Village' 2CD set on Impulse!

If it were in print I'd recommend Vibrations as an essential Ayler recording--such a great quartet: Ayler, Cherry, Peacock, Murray. I agree with the choices of Maeght & Spiritual Unity.
