I had the same thought. I won't ask Wayne's widow if she knows about it...

This was not one of the choices, but my favorite era is 1965, after Love Supreme and up to the quartet's last date.

Wayne Shorter Zero Gravity documentary

I had contributed to the campaign many years ago and my understanding was that there would be a DVD. I am sure that was abandoned. Is that a violation of the kickstarter/gofundme? I don't have a prime account. I know there is a 30-day free trial but with everything going on in my life right now, I am not ready to start a trial and be mindful of the 30-day deadline. I am not sure when I will have time to watch it. I only contributed under the assumption I was paying for a DVD. -
If a DC showing is scheduled, it would be nice to organize a concert.

And 20 years later, the Alderson tapes were found and are being released. A Bob Dylan scholar found them apparently at NYPL?

Another party needs to be paid, yes. Would Kenny Barron remember? It was his first and possibly only gig with Stitt. -

In the NPR feature, the fact that other saxophonists sat in with Stitt at various Left Bank shows is mentioned, which is interesting. I was told of a DC sax player who sat in. It was certainly much later than 1973 but I will ask him. -

99% sure it was Fields but not 100% sure because of that 'last year' thing. If Jim sees a musical common point, that is very strong evidence. I trust his ears. Two more angles to pursue: 1) This is not the full concert. The announcement at the end of CD2 corresponds to the first set since he says 'we will be back'. If the second set announcement exists, it will mention the guest. This is exactly why these tapes should be in an archive for researchers and not at the mercy of record producers to chop up and resequence. 2) Fowler told me the Stitt/Thompson was recorded but he did not know where the tape was. If it ever surfaces, we will know if Fields is on it. Give me two hours in that basement... -

I found a 1975 article on Mickey Fields that mentions him sitting in with Stitt 'last year'. We are looking for 1973 though. In 1974, Stitt co-led a Quintet with Lucky Thompson at Left Bank. Is that the time Fields sat in 'last year'? It does not say he sat in with Thompson and Stitt. -

Miles was wrong about Weather Report. He did not listen closely enough.

I fell asleep and missed the part where he makes announcements. Does he mention a guest? I think there is another sax sitting in on Stella and possibly the blues before that. Perhaps Mickey Fields? Does Blumenthal address this in his notes? I know he goes through the alto/tenor breakdown. Personnel listing only mentions alto. Oops. -

I hear it on the head in and the head out, and it also seems there are two different sax solos one after the other. I doubt it is Sonny taking a breather in middle of his solo. Tape bleed is an interesting theory. I will listen again with that in mind, but it would not explain two sax solos back to back. -

Is it just me or is there a second sax on Stella by Starlight? -
Since COVID I have been playing it safe and only do Zoom orgies.

The compositions alluded to were not actually lost in a flood. They surfaced a few years ago, in the possession of family members: https://jazzleadsheets.com/composers/herbie-nichols.html

Pianist Lafayette Gilchrist is performing a set of Nichols pieces with a Sextet this Saturday 2/18 in Frederick, MD. The second set will be his own compositions. My understanding is that the Nichols idea was suggested by Bill Shoemaker. Bertrand.

I saw him at the Kennedy Center a few months ago. He was embarking on a mega worldwide tour. But yes, no studio work in a long time.
