  1. Yes, they take submissions from the public. But they don't want campaigns, so 50 of us on the board cannot all nominate him. Just one of us. Whether someone with pull like Mark has more chance than a nobody like me I am not sure, but I would not be surprised. There is a mystery committee which I suspect includes several previous honorees, such as HH. I could be wrong.
  2. It looks like Blue Lament was not on the vinyl version, but that is the only bonus track as far as I can tell.

    Bill Lee

These are all very interesting questions and I wish someone had really talked to him years ago about his life and career. There is an interview on YouTube which has its merits but is pretty shallow. He was already having memory lapses.
  4. One was recorded by the Messengers around the same time (Blue Ching). Blue Lament was recorded by Don Sickler years later. The other four are orphaned.
  5. The 1959 Blakey came out because Zev Feldman wanted it released and talked Don Was into it. Cuscuna's previous assessment seems to have been ignored, or maybe he changed his mind? If Zev pushes the KD date it might have a chance. But does he care about this one?
  6. I am curious about the set list.
  7. That February 1950 Jam session with Clifford Brown and Hasaan (William Langford) must have been interesting.
  8. There are out-takes from the film at the Schomberg Library. Not cataloged yet so there is still a possibility. I was looking for film of Booker Little...
  9. Katey came down to the DC/Baltimore area this week-end and we brainstormed. I will post some questions occasionally here. 1. Have any Duke Pearson compositions been sampled? I assume so, but specific examples would be great. 2. I know of no video footage of Duke, but there used to be no footage of Hank either... Duke's nephew thought he saw footage from the 1960 Newport gig with the Jazztet on YouTube a while back. Has anyone else ever come across it? Duke never went to Europe but maybe the Brazilian trip with Nancy Wilson could yield some footage? I am thinking of the Ray Charles video with Tina Brooks. The big band did do a 30-minute video for Connecticut Public TV but they could not find it. Bertrand.
  10. A musician friend asked about this pianist who only recorded from 1952 to 1962. What do we know about him? He was born in NOLA in 1928, and was based in LA. Some recordings are: 1) Harold Land: In New York. 2) Harold Land: Take Aim. 3) Sonny Stitt: Hard Swing. 4) Jimmy Woods: Awakening. Also dates with Bird, Wardell Gray, Teddy Edwards and Shorty Rogers.
  11. Are there titles by other artists in the UHQCD series or just Elvin?
  12. In what way were these 'lost'?
  13. Might still be worth doing the 'Ask a Librarian' thing. I am always wary when I am told something is 'lost'.
  14. The disclaimer below says that the info is from the David Meeker book. They don't necessarily have a copy. Rooster told me that the story is that the tapes were wiped. Further research is needed.
  15. It was supposed to say Jazz Goes To College in the title. How do I fix that?
  16. It is in his book. He played too out for Horace.
  17. Lesh's experiences with Coltrane are hardly unique. But he has the cache to sell books. I find this state of things frustrating. Grace Slick has stated that Sketches of Spain inspired White Rabbit, but I don't expect her to write a foreword to a Gil Evans bio.
  18. Don't know for sure. I had not been aware of this one. In my fantasy world, all of these should come out legally but my fantasy world does not have a compartment for market realities.
  19. This is a bootleg of a 1966 UK date with the Shaw/Washington lineup. Anyone pick this up?
  20. One of the contributors is illustrious Coltrane scholar Phil Lesh.
  21. I guess he did not read my Facebook comment. Where did he get March 8th? So if it is from a different gig on a different day then there could be more video...
  22. Marc Myers is suggesting on his blog that this is the version of Summertime that is circulating, but that one is 17 minutes long. The date I have for that session is 3/10/68. Myers gives a date of 3/8/68 for the video. He also only knows about the 4 tracks on the Blue Bossa CD.
  23. I was wondering about that! I thought about that when the CD came out. That CD in itself was a find! Love the big band tracks.
  24. How long as he had this? He just found it recently?
