Well, they are pretty contraversial over at the vinyl asylum, but I have six of them and love them all. I have received nothing but flat and (mostly) quiet pressings. Mind you, I am not the kind of guy that's going to return a record if there is one tick on one cut, but there are those that would. Life is too short, besides, if you want perfection, go get a CD. In any event, strongly recommended, though I wish that they weren't so friggin expensive, though certainly cheaper than an original. I'd buy them all if I could. . .

Have you considered using Cadence Sleeves or plastic sleeves that will cut down on shelf space? They've really helped me, especially given the amount of review discs and others I have kicking around. As for the hard drive question - I've been toying with getting a 500 gigger and a Squeezebox to stream my music, but the wife thinks I am nuts. If you need to, my advice would be to rip to a hard drive and store your CDs in case the hard drive fails. Do NOT get rid of your CDs (or give them to a nice board member or the Salvation Army if you are feeling charitable ).

So very mellow. I've had a hard time getting into it. Panopticon clicked with me much more quickly. Have you checked out Old Man Gloom? An Isis side-project (Aaron Turner plus various HydraHead affiliated artists) which has released some really interesting albums that are fairly eclectic but surprisingly solid. The Isis dvd "Clearing the Eye" that Ipecac put out a month ago is very, very good. Thanks for the tips, John. Not heard Old Man Gloom, but it does sound like it is up my alley.

Been around since jazzcentralstation (when you were still in high school), but that's cool. I was just injecting some humor, or humour, if you prefer, into your usual odd/self-important posts. I would venture a guess that most people here, because they are serious music fans, probably change their "favorite" or "greatest" record every day. I know I do (though Loveless is always in the top ten for me). I am currently battling between Caetano Veloso's first record vs. Double Nickels vs. Crescent. But really, perhaps the greatest two records are "Jack The Bear" or "Mohagany Hall Stomp"? Aren't they? Who knows. But in any event, the Misfits are decent - wife is more of a fan than I and I prefer Samhain - I do love the other bands you cite, I mean, doesn't everyone? I can tell you that the new Isis record does indeed rule.

You are all on drugs. Loveless IS the greatest rock record of all time. The record is suppossed to sound the way it does. At the time (and subsequently), there has been no other record like it. Hard-driving, emotive and an ass-kicker in terms of density. You want overrated - what about all of that Baby Boomer crap that has been shoved down our throats the last thirty plus years Shall we start an overrated thread?

agreed. those early Ride sides are the same way. one needs to keep in mind that the overall sound quality of a disc depends on not only the pressing (thickness of the vinyl, quality of the vinyl, etc) but also the way it was mixed before heading to the factory. some of those Creation sessions were pretty condensed, and you'll get that regardless of what format you buy. brings up the same old question: why shell out $20 for a 150gm LP when it's source is a digital master? doesn't make sense... ← Excellent point (I've been trying to find out whether a dig master was used on both the MBV and Buckley). I think thata the MBV was analog but am not sure. Seems like there is almost more guesswork here than for our Jazz queries, though. . . Oh well. All I know is that I saw the Minutement Documentary, We Jam Econo, last night and I am inspired to track all of that stuff down now too (I had some on cassette and CD). Great film if you are a fan of that era. . .

Just curious if anyone has picked up any recent rock 180g LP reissues? I picked up My Bloody Vlaentine's Loveless and Jeff Buckley's Grace. The former is fantastic and I haven't found the time to spin the latter. What I am most curious about are the new 4AD reissues of the Pixies material. A related issue is the sound quality. Since the original records were pressed when quality control wasn't the same as, say, the 50's Blue Notes, and they haven't been reissued to death like our beleoved jazz titles (causing tape degradation), I wonder if these might actually sound *better* than the originals. . . Any thoughts? Experiences?

I've just rekindled my itch for vinyl recently and am tracking down some of the must haves. This is obviously one and my 90's impulse version is pretty grim (it may be from the 80's actually, but it is not in front of me). I know that this came out awhile ago but how is it - should I track down earlier pressings? Most importantly, what tapes were used? Before I plunk down $30, I want to make sure that the compression is limited and that "Pursuance" comes from a similar source as the recent Deluxe Version/SACD. Thanks for any input.
