  1. Like him in good company, especially with brass; who is his company?
  2. Maybe in the wrong topic, explain why Shelly Manne only landed a single leader date at Impulse! Namely this one:
  3. Wow. Never even seen this! Looks great. Now: Thank you, John!
  4. The last sleeve is the original. I have the Black Lion, but downloaded a copy shot of the Polydor sleeve, and wrapped it around that blah blah, Black Lion Cd sleeve; I did the same for the Curson, Tears for Dolphy, like any weird jazz nerd would do🤔
  5. This is where it gets interesting. Like was Black Lion a reissue lable only or signing artists too? Where does Freedom fit in? The more advant garde wing of Black Lion? Was Julius Hemphill, Andrew Hill, Archie Shepp, Freedom lable staples? Like Brilliant Corners, I've seen Polydor, Black Lion and Freedom forms of this record with all kinds of weird-ass cover art. What label did Stanely Cowell sign with, and do I have the original sleeve art as close as it can be? Here's the one I own: About Alan Bates, did he "found" Black Lion in 1968 as a forward releasing label, or was it a reissue program? For example I have these Black Lion CDs: Which is a Fontana issue, or Which is a Polydor release. Confused!
  6. Randall Goosby. What an incredible performer. Flawless, impeccable.
  7. So was Marion Brown, John McLaughlin, Stanley Cowell, signed to Polydor? When did Freedom and Black Lion come in the picture? Did they split the catalogue or is Freedom really a Black Lion imprint, or the other way around?
  8. I like the mid-60's BN Blue Mitchell period very much. Fun stuff. lols. 1870s was far funnier. Can't forget something I've never seen. What a lineup!
  9. 1879s, lols, that's some funny stuff! Good stuff. I bought Breakthrough right out of Dusty Groove, the last time (not this time) I was in Chicago a few years back. Glad I did, I believe it's a Dusty Grooove edition (it's packed in a box).
  10. Jazz peeps: Whgaty do you know about the label Polydor It looks like with my skim research on this board, that no thread exists on this label...tell me more. I understand that it seems that Germany and Britian in the early part of the century created Polydor. I want to know in the 60's why they went out jazz, and signed Marion Brown and John McLaughlin among others. Weren't they initally associated with classical, in collaboration with maybe Phillips? What you guys know about Polydor and their jazz program?
  11. Debut, legit, Japanese mini-lp/cd (plus OBI 😊) I picked up at Reckless Records in Chicago, that will replace my current, I don't know where it came from copy: Always thought that looked like Slash's head coming out of that lady's horn 🫠 I like these kind of stories! Get it. Can't tell you how many times I've said "no fucking way!!!" out loud in a record store when I would come across something totally unexpected or a complete surprise. Dizzy Reece's Blues in Trinity Conn edition is one of those outbursts of late.
  12. Never crossed it, and always been curious: how is it and who is playing on it; that is, who are the friends and who are the neighbors on 131 Prince Street?🤷‍♂️
  13. How's the sound? Guessing '52 not so great...if listenable to very good, I'm in!
  14. Well, being a CD hype sticker aficionado myself, and well-versed on this topic, what you should do, is you carefully remove the shrinkwrap from the CD product; next, arm yourself with pricision-like scissors and then cut around the shrinkwrap involving said hype sticker. Lastly, insert into CD booklet, and vaula, you have your hype sticker, safe and sound.
  15. Really enjoy his early albums. Huge favorites:
  16. Sweets! I have a story about this set. I was at a CD bargain basement sort of a place somewhere (San Antonio?) in 2010 or so on vacation and the Sweets 2 CD elite set was there used for $30, but the discs were shabby, but they had a CD cleaning machine, so while cleaning them, the dude went berserk on the second disc and scratched it out and told me he couldn’t sell it to me because of the damage; he said it's unsellable and that he had to throw the set away. I said, well I'll just wait until you close and when throw it out in the trash, I’ll root for it myself. Long story short, he called the manager, and she gave the wave to gift it to me, avoiding me rooting through their trash. Side note, the dude polishing the second CD did fuck it up, but it mostly plays. I had every intension to buy the set, but I did wind up getting the set for FREE!!
  17. Wowwww! Everything, everybody said here about this record is on par. Picked up the Japenese mini-lp Freedom edition at Reckless Records when I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Sounds great on my system.
  18. Wow, what a provocative sleeve, given the time period!
  19. 311's original guitarist was arrested for streaking and the band found it pretty amusing and changed their name to three-eleven. Tonight, we are going to Severence Hall to see The Cleveland Orchestra perform Mozart's Don Giovanni and Third Violin Concerto No. 3, juxtaposed with Richard Strauss' Syphony in F minor. Randall Goosby, Violin, Conductor is Marie Jacquot
  20. 311 is police code in Omaha, Nebraska for "indecent exposure".
