I figured Negro was a deliberate choice to make a connection to black music. Brazilians even adopted the word "black" (pronounced blackie) during the black power movement. There's a great Brazilian funk band, Banda Black Rio, and when I was just in Brazil I saw that certain dark beers are called black on the label.

One other thing about the title Ouro Negro. In Portuguese the word for the color black is preto (I was just in the town of Ouro Preto last week). Negro, which in Spanish is the color black, in Brazil is used as a racial term only as far as I know, people may call them self negro or negra, so it's even more of a play on words. There's a DVD of a performance of the music with some of the guest singers, but I haven't seen it.
  3. There's some interestesting things going on in the electric Ayler stuff, but only promise. I think if he were around 20 years longer and could have worked with Laswell something interesting could have happened (based on Ask the Ages and Too Much Sugar for a Dime).

Only the other day I learned that he played with The Fugs for a while.
  5. The Seance is my favorite Hawes album, but I really love the All Night Session discs and Four--he meshed very well with guitarists.

  7. Excellent Bay Area singer, way too underappreciated. Wife of pianist Larry Dunlap. I saw her once at the Monterey Festival. She did this great album with Kenny Barron for Japanese Sony in 1986:

  10. Can't blame the Ayds marketers. They preceded AIDS by years.
  11. Listening to Pandora right now while doing other stuff, and a few minutes ago I noticed I was digging a solo piano version of "Whisper Not." Checked to see who it was, and it was Hersch. I think I said this before, I think I prefer him solo to trio.

  15. Taylor was the best guitarist the Stones ever had but Woods fits the stage image better. He and Rod Stewart must have been seeing the same barber since the Faces.
  16. One of my favorite albums is "Toshiro Mifune Sings for Swingin' Lovers," with Dorothy Ashby and Art Van Damme.
