  1. Tim Buckley - Starsailor Man this sounds better than the CD!
  2. Tim Buckley - Starsailor original vinyl - sonically kicks ass on the crappy cd I had Wilco - Sky Blue Sky Deluxe edition
  3. I saved up $500 in coins and I should be getting about $400 back for returning the tops to my can-am cabinets... might be time to pick up a G&L tele or strat...
  4. Sure - it makes sense that the price would fall now that all of the music is readily available. BTW, I take back part of what I said before - Black Fire sounds better to me in the Mosaic as well. But I don't know that it sounds a couple hundred bucks better.
  5. I'm not so sure about the current value of the big Hill Mosaic box on the collector's market. Prices have fallen lately, and the last one went on eBay for under $180... Yes, and I don't think it is worth $180 for the sound quality improvement in Point of Departure, unless you got that much dough that has fallen behind every couch and seat cushion in your house without you even noticing. Just my opinion. Again, this assumes that sound quality is the ONLY deciding factor.
  6. IMO, if sound quality is the only consideration then it isn't worth keeping the Mosaic given how much you could get for it on the collector's market. Point of Departure sounds a little better on the Mosaic, but for the other sessions I either prefer the individul cds (e.g. Compulsion) or find it to be a wash.
  7. Jazz Record Center - 26th btwn 7th and 8th. I've been a few times but not too often as it is slightly out of the way, the weekend hours aren't very good, and the prices are usually pretty high. But it is a cool spot as a museum if nothing else.
  8. Yes - it is the domestic version. I realize it is not the rarest cd and I'm not expecting anything crazy in a trade.
  9. Andrew Hill - Change Kenny Cox - Introducing Horace Silver - Six Pieces Sonny Rollin's Next Album Horace Silver - Cape Verdean Blues Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge Solomon Iloir - African Highlife Art Blakey - Holiday for Skins I also wanted to pick up some 80s punk cds, but they were shockingly expensive new. I think I'll stick to the old LPs.
  10. What's the point of a status symbol if you don't flaunt it? MG I guess... but I normally see these super-expensive cars coming out of garages around here. BTW, I checked and it turns out I was off on the GT price tag by a factor of three... I think I told this story on the boards once, but once I was walking around a dodgy part of Paris late at night and saw a homeless guy pissing on a yellow Lamborghini that was parked on the sidewalk. Great image.
  11. There is often one parked on my block, which always throws me for a loop. If you are going to spend $150K + on a car, can't you spring for the extra $600/month for a parking space instead of leaving it on a narrow block in downtown Manhattan?
  12. Why the hell would you want to know THAT??? I always make an effort to divert my eyes from that line on the CC statement...
  13. I think they should have a running low club where they keep your CC info on file and automatically send you anything that hits the list.
  14. My Can-Am cabinets arrived this week. Initial observations: 1) They are very well made 2) Asthetically, they are not something I'd normally choose to have in my living room, but compared to the alternatives, they are fine 3) They are deceptively heavy. Thank god the delivery man was nice enough to help me set them up (which was NOT part of his job). 4) The formica tops are, IMO, atrociously ugly. To *me*, they look MUCH better without them. I hope they aren't too much of a hassle to return, as they are about $200/each. If you are on the fence about the tops, I recommend either not getting them or only getting one to see if you like it before getting enough for you entire set up. Also be aware that with the top on, it is near impossible to get at the last dozen or so discs in the top drawer, as there is 6-8 inches of overhang. Awful, awful, awful - worst mistake I've made all month. 5) Can-Am is sloooooow - I waited about five weeks for my order - I guess that is understandable given that they are a niche market, but still, for the money they charge... Overall, I'm happier with the Can-Am cabinets than any other system I've had for storing/organizing my cds, but, again IMO, you really have to have the money to burn and a bit of patience to justify buying them.
  15. I noticed sorting through my collection today that I have two copies of this, both in excellent condition - I'm pretty sure this isn't so easy to find these days (not impossible, but it takes a little effort if I'm not mistaken). I'd like to trade one of them for another OOP Fantasy cd. I'm open to a lot of trades, but I am pretty interested in the ltd Randy Weston cds they did and maybe one or two of the Don Friedmans. If you are interested, PM me with what you have to offer - even if it isn't one of these two artists. There are probably a lot I'd like to have that I'm not thinking of right now. Thanks. EDIT: Also interested in Yusef Lateef - Yusef. Seems to be a little tricky to find these days.
  16. I noted a while back in another thread that J&R had shrunk the jazz deparment down to fit the blue cds in the same room. Well, it has shrunk notably since then. They are down to about two rows of jazz cds, with everything currently on sale and no sign of restocking. Just an FYI for those of you thinking of making a trip down there - IMO it ain't worth it. It is reminiscent of the post-bankruptcy days of Tower. Aside from the new conns I couldn't find anything that didn't fall into the "disc I already have" category or the "crap" category. Looks like I'm an online shopper from now on.
  17. The best deal downtown is the Washington Squre hotel. Small rooms, but it's a nice place in a great neighborhood and about a 20 min walk from the venue. You can get a room for around $180/night, which is about as good as it gets in Manhattan. Don't spread the word - if it gets out the price will go up, and this is where I send all my guests.
  18. Iron Mountain does more than just paper. They store all the back up tapes of my firm's electronic data in what they represent as a fireproof, humidity and temperature controlled room.
  19. One way or another, Concord is going to have to get their $90 million worth out of Fantasy - you don't suppose they can do it on comps and Stax alone, do you? If so, then it would seem that Fantasy really undersold itself.
  20. As many of you noticed, Tower.com often lists the same cd with different release dates at wildly different prices. I bought several of the cheaper copies of various cds on my order. Though not advertised as such on the site, they are used. I think it is shadey that they don't say they are used on the site, but they seem to be in good shape and the prices were good even for second-hand discs. I won't return these, but I'm not sure how much repeat business they are going to get from me.
  21. True or not, I believe the "golden age" of jazz reissues is coming to an end.
  22. I had so many chances to buy those records for around $60 or $70 back when that was an unimaginable amount of money for me to spend on a record...
