    Gurss Who?

As I said, of course there have been others. My favorite organist Joey D is a classic example. However, I think this kid was slightly more advanced at the same age. The way he plays Monk is amazing.
  2. I am ecstatic. I have discovered Joey Alexander, self taught 14 yr old prodigy from Jakarta. Been playing since he was 6 yrs old and was accomplished at 8. He's coming to Yoshi's in Oakland, CA in May, have my tickets already. Had to tear myself away from youtube. Listened to dad's old jazz records, dad bought him a small keyboard. Monk and Armstrong caught his interest and as they say, the rest is history. I'd like to thank Fate & Destiny for bringing his parents together. I've heard of self taught but this is unbelievable. Has the jazz music world ever seen anything like this. I'm sure someone will say there have been plenty of child prodigies.

  4. I'm not here often but I appreciate the feedback I get from you all. I caught AA at Yoshi's in Oakland a couple of years ago and on his live sets he does speed things up a bit.
  5. I'm a big fan of this kid, but his latest release, A Rift In Decorum: Live At The Village Vanguard, is way too somber for me. It's prevalent in all of his recordings but on this release after listening to the sound samples, I almost started crying. Too melancholy for my tastes. I'm a foot tapper, finger popper. I need a LITTLE bit of that which I do find in his other recordings but I'll have to take a pass on this latest one. Having said all that, cuts like Rollcall For Those Absent from the cd The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint will always keep me a fan of this young man.
  6. Is it me or is this young lady not getting the attention she deserves. Wish I could catch her live. I hope it's the fact that maybe I just don't hear a lot in terms of todays young jazz artists, don't get out as much as I used to. There is amazing coherence and buoyancy in her ideas, crisp and crackling, never a lost note. It's like she's playing supercharged hardbop 2017 style. Just checked her discog and found a new(to me)title, Time For Love, just hit the "place your order" button on Amazon. As far as I know, she has 2 other titles, New York Attitude and North Bird. Both sets imho are superb. She is an amazing young lady with a very interesting background. Feedback would be appreciated. As you can see I'm not here very often. Thanks

    AMG

You disagree with me, ok, question was is there an alternative site............

    AMG

How many is many? This site has undergone a drastic change since I first started watching it in 1998 and now I'm bombarded with ads. Like I said, imho the site has gone from being the very best of its type to the absolute worst

    AMG

Not sure if this is the right place, I don't go to other forums, but what has happened to allmusic.com or what was AMG., it's gone from best to worst. Is there an alternative site to allmusic.com
  10. I haven't read everything here. So, if he hasn't been mentioned, here we go. A few years ago I discovered Frank Haynes on a Grant Green set titled "Reaching Out". He's also very good on "Osmosis" by Kenny Dorham, "The Complete One And Two Feet In The Gutter Sessions" by Dave Bailey, "Les McCann Ltd In New York" by Les McCann. He also worked with Gerald Wilson and Randy Weston........
  11. Sonny Criss overlooked? Are you kidding me

    Cory Weeds

As you can see I'm not here often. I visit usually when I need some info from all you aficionados and connoisseurs. I may have written about this recently, not sure. I have absolutely fallen in love with Cory Weeds. I have all the titles in his brief discography. Is there any info re: his next CD release. IMHO, as far as hardbop in 2016, he's at the top of the list. On at least one of the cuts on Condition Blue: The Music Of Jackie McLean, he sounds as good or maybe even better than Jackie does on the originals. (am I losing my mind LOL) His ideas are fluid and coherent, seamless. I just looked at his touring schedule, can anybody tell me the next time he will be in the Lower 48 preferably the West Coast, or am I going to have to book a flight to Vancouver or New York. Thanks.
  13. All of a sudden when I click on my amg icon from desktop, the page comes in for a second or two then "Ad Blocker" page appears and offers "SupportFreeContent premium plugin is offered. Any ideas on how to disable/remove this.

    Miles

I just saw the biopic "Miles Ahead" staring Don Cheadle. One the worse biopics I've ever seen. Right up there with James Brown. Stupid cops and robbers chase scene over a stolen reel to reel tape. Best part of the movie is the closing credits sequence at the end of the movie , enjoyed seeing Shorter and Hancock in that sequence. And the music/score, a patchwork with too much emphasis on his electric funk side. Seeing as how I met Miles and Francis when he appeared at Basin Street West in San Francisco, it was extra bad for me. Anyway, that's my take on it. I could go on.
  15. I'm having trouble justifying why D.J. is #4 on my list of drummers behind T. Williams, M. Roach and A. Blakey On which cd's will I find J. D's most bopish drumming as leader or sideman? Oops, I should have said #5 because I forgot E. Jones. I must be getting old. LOL paul secor, I'm afraid I would have to agree with that. I must have heard something years ago that put him in my group

    Cory Weeds

I love Cory Weeds. Discovered him a few months ago, had to buy all his titles. I think I read he has or had a club in Canada. Does he have a touring schedule as I'd love to see him live. Thanks......
  17. I thought I had every Lee Morgan recording as leader/sideman. Can someone tell me about this release. The liner notes do give some info. It was recorded just prior to the Lighthouse set.

    Roy Hargrove

Four day stint at Yoshi's San Francisco. This is a re-wind from March when he cancelled due to ill health. Has anyone caught his sets? Can you critique them for me. I couldn't make it, surgery got in the way. Thanks
  19. Doing my own research, I can't find anything by J. D. that sounds boppish enough for me to hear. I thought "Sound Travels" came close but no cigar. So, to the experts. On which session will I find Mr. DeJohnette at his most boppish, leader or side man. Thanks.
  20. Ok, as you can see I'm not here very often. But I'm one who has no problem admitting when I'm wrong, and after seeing Ambrose Akinmusire(he even pronounced his last name upon my request)live at Yoshi's in Oakland, I'm here to admit that I was TOTALLY wrong about this kid. I said that I couldn't hear any lineage in his recordings. There's nothing like a live session to clear up any misconceptions, AND THEY WERE ALL CLEARED UP ON TUE NIGHT, I was sitting at a table that was so close to the stage that it was touching the stage, I can tell you what all the guy's shoes looked like. I heard Hub blasted into my ears the entire session, Freddie Hubbard is coming through loud and clear in this kid. His writing skills are amazing at this early stage of his career. The drummer Justin Brown, phenomenal. At one point I closed my eyes and I thought I was listening to Tony Williams, unbelievable. Re: Walter Smith, after re-listening to "Casually Introducing Walter Smith III", a very solid Neo Bopper, I believe Neo Bop defines the group's sound and direction, Neo Bop soundly rooted in Hardbop. Harish Raghavan, a very solid bass player even though he hit an extreme sour note during an arco solo on one cut. IMHO the weakest link in this strong chain is the piano player Sam Harris. Some of his solos seemed to wander a bit. To top it off, Ambrose is a Native Son, local kid from Oakland, CA. Contrary to what I posted previously, I would choose this kid over any of the guys I mentioned, I have his 1st 2 releases, am re-listening to them and ordered the latest release(The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint)from Amazon just before I started writing this. Also, for someone who is relatively new to this game, he has an engaging, magnetic stage presence. There was a segment with a local drummer and keyboardist that could have been left out IMHO. Last, the worst thing about the set to my amazement, at the end of the set the audience did not make enough noise to bring the group back out for at least one more cut,(8pm set, no 10pm set) unbelievable....
  21. Re: Waking Dreams by Chris Dingman, on 11 of the 14 cuts, same elevator music for my ears, obviously xybert, you hear something different
  22. I can't understand what the fuss is all about. I purchased his first two releases to try my best to hear this kid. I'm sorry but this 64 yr old be/hardbop guy cannot hear this kid. IMHO, his sounds like sophisticated elevator music. No swing, no fingerpopin, foot/toe tapping involved, purely cerebral. Pretty music, beautiful music? Yes, no doubt about it. But all while I'm listening, my feet are still and my fingers are not popping. He's appearing at Yoshi's in Oakland on Tue 6-24-2014 and after re listening to sound samples of his releases(including the new one)I'm having second thoughts about hearing this elevator music live. On one of his releases he even gimmics up the Golson classic Stablemates. Maybe I'm having third thoughts about going. I've read otherwise, but I don't hear any lineage here. Do you? Same story with Walter Smith III who is a member of Akinmusire's quintet. There was a big fuss about him, same cerebral elevator music. What say you..........
  23. As I suspected, Thanks All the links on his page work except the email link, oh well. All the links on his page work except the email link, oh well.
