  1. With you all the way. Personally, I've always thought that JDF got too much, too soon, and never really got his own thing together because everyone thought that he was doing it right. He's kind of a soul jazz version of Wynton Marsalis. I'll listen to him, but mainly when there's someone I like with him. Thanks Supa Groover.......... MG BINGO! I find the two B-3ers that Abercrombie has played with --- Dan Wall and Jeff Palmer --- to be much more interesting. Seems like everytime I visit this site, I discover new(to me)talent. This time it's Jeff Palmer, and I think he writes most of the cuts on his cd's. Thanks JETman. Am I the only one here who likes Bill Heid as a Joey D alternative??????
  2. It's amazing how people can eat like that. Yes, he's XXXXXXXXXXXXXX large
  3. Not re but I've discovered Don Aliquo on "Jazz Folk"............
  4. great info CJ, yes Cobb is still Cobb but I was expecting Coryell and got this guy Cotter because Coryell couldn't make the Friday night set. JD had a nice little trumpet piece and I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad he didn't sing. Somebody needs to tell Joey S T O P S I N G I N G. PLEASE
  5. Had to go see my favorite jazz organist at Yoshi's, Oakland, on Friday night 8-24-2012. the trio included Larry Coryell replacement Steve Cotter on guitar and the ageing jimmy cobb on drums. It was billed as a tribute to Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery but I heard no reference in spoken word or music to either of those giants. Very average, mediocre set. J.D's hold on me may be slipping. Because I'm a selected completist, I finally purchased "40" and "Wonderful! Wonderful! but after tonights very bland performance, I think I'd rather listen to Bill Heid instead, at least for now............
  6. 110 people watched this and 0 replies, unbelievable. Where are all my fellow Dex fans. Well, I guess I'm still the biggest Dexter Gordon fan on the planet and refuse to let this great musician and his music go unresponded too. I guess it's me and you Morganized, thanks for posting that, I really appreciate it.............
  7. Since I love a two tenor winner or tenor battles, I'm getting back in Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray/Dexter Gordon. Jazz Portraits Mingus In Wonderland was recommended by someone on this forum for the playing of John Handy and Booker Ervin, great recommendation especially No Private Income Blues.............
  8. Funny you should ask. Lionel Hampton. I only own 5 titles............
  9. Let us all thank the web designer for the wonderfully eye-friendly white type on magenta background. obviously no one was looking for one except you. maybe you should re read the question
  10. Wrong forum, topic been covered before? This is the only forum I visit and never deviate from topic, BUT, what in hell has happend to amg. If I were to compare it to an automobile, I'd say it's gone from the showroom to the junkyard. Are there any alternatives. Thanks..........
  11. Had just discovered the fantastic drummer Eric Harland. Then while being dazzled by Erena Terakuba, I discover her drummer Lee Pearson, equally as impressive as Harland. Check him out on youtube testing a new set of drums for the manufacturer.Stephen Riley has a unique sound, reminds me of Charlie Rouse, lets see if he can sustain it. But thanks to jhoots, for me, the discoverey of the year so far is Erena Terakuba. She is a barely 20yr old phenominal alto sax player. When you hear New York Attitude and Northbird, you'll know what I'm talking about...........
  12. Caught the 10pm set at Yoshi's Oakland of The Cookers: Billy Harper TS, Craig Handy AS, David Weiss-Eddie Henderson Tpts, Cecil McBee B, George Cables P, Billy Hart D. Lackluster, uninspired are the words that come to mind. The music sounds good, McBee and Hart are still quite capable at 77 and 71 and Cables has always been a favorite, but Weiss and Henderson did not impress me at all especially Henderson, his ideas seem to lack fluidity and cohesiveness, seem to bottom out. I could swear I heard some sour notes in their ensemble work. Don't remember the name of the ballad feature for Handy, but why have ensemble work on a ballad? Harper still has a "simmering" fire down below but imho the group lacks overall excitement. I don't think I'd go to them first for my must have modern day Hard Bop..........
  13. Do any of those compilations include his stuff with Basie? Forgot to mention Count Basie Septet & Octet and Benny Goodman At Click 1948 are on the way.............
  14. Ok, I now have The Wardell Gray Story, The Chase feat. Dexter Gordon, One For Prez, the Hampton Hawes edition(Memorial) of Live At The Haig 1952, Complete Sunset & New Jazz Masters, and Wardell Gray Memorial Vol's 1&2. Am I missing something? Is there anything I need to pick up to complete this?
  15. Come on Allen, I'm waiting with bated breath for your response.........
  16. Ladybird missing from Hampton Hawes ed. but for the price difference, I can do without one song, good recommendation, saved me some research time........

    Gene Quill

Wow, lots of Phil Woods haters on this forum. I'm not a huge fan so I'm not here to defend, but I do enjoy Sugan and Musique Du Bois. Whoops, I own 7 more of his titles..........

    Wardell Gray

He was such a great player with a very short recording career, so I want it all. I have "Complete Sunset & New Jazz Masters, "Memorial Album Vol. 2 and "Wardell Gray w/Dexter Gordon The Chase". What am I missing, what do I need to purchase. Thanks.........
  19. While searching for a cover photo of Nancy Wright's Moanin', I saw the cover of Sharel Cassity's Just For You. Checked her out on AMG and Amazon, very nice. Had no idea the ladies were this strong.............
  20. Yes. I would say the information in this post is what interests contemporary players these days. Not 'inside/outside' so much. I think ?uestlove has had a impact on younger jazz drummers even though he doesn't play jazz all that often, he's pretty encyclopedic. The influence of integrating drum machine like patterns into acoustic drum set playing has become a part of the expanding the language. Thats difficult for older jazz fans, who love Blakey, Philly Joe, Tony, Elvin and Jack to swallow; the whole drum machine thing is my generation and younger and easier to relate with. On Pat Metheny's forthcoming "Unity Band" album, Antonio Sanchez adds a drum n bass groove to "Signals" the debut of the Orchestrion improv Pat played each night on that tour, but in the case of the record, incorporating the live players into the mix. Its really really cool what Antonio plays on that track, but for people who like swinging, its not all that interesting. Funny you should mention drum kits or whatever their called because I absolutely HATE them. I refuse to listen to/purchase any music that has drum kit, imho a dumb invention like the electric piano and bass..........
  21. I was checking out Tony Monaco and discovered Nancy Wright, looks like she's out of Oakland, very nice basic sound and ideas, will follow her...............
  22. I had hear the name before along with all the other young fellows of his generation, but man, I didn't know what I was missing. Like I said, it's as if he's soloing but he's not soloing and when he does take the official solo, it's pure delight.........
  23. Caught James Farm (Joshua Redman-Ts, Aaron Parks-P, Eric Harland-D, Matt Pennman-B, I hate these group names, why can't it be The Joshua Redman Quartet)at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. tonight Thur 05-25-2012 10pm show. I couldn't hear JR in the beginning, I purchased "Wish" and "Joshua Redman" just because I'm a collector, he was a young lion, and he had a name from his dad, but there's nothing like hearing someone live to change one's mind. I just want to say, the reason I felt compelled to report this is because of ERIC HARLAND. Prior to tonight my favorite drummers who are still alive would be Louis Nash and Jeff Tain Watts, but after tonight, sorry Louis/Jeff, ts ERIC HARLAND, what a phenominal drummer, I got the feeling that he was soloing when he wasn't actually soloing, his drumming is that strong, thoughrouly versed in modern hard bob drumming. Not a lot of dates with drummers as leader but Im definitely going to purchase "Voyager: Live By Night"............
  24. I love reading your responses, facinating.........
  25. For me it was Trane's Live At Birdland, the cuts Afro Blue and The Promise. I was approx 15 at the time...........
