    Cory Weeds

As you can see I'm not here often. I visit usually when I need some info from all you aficionados and connoisseurs. I may have written about this recently, not sure. I have absolutely fallen in love with Cory Weeds. I have all the titles in his brief discography. Is there any info re: his next CD release. IMHO, as far as hardbop in 2016, he's at the top of the list. On at least one of the cuts on Condition Blue: The Music Of Jackie McLean, he sounds as good or maybe even better than Jackie does on the originals. (am I losing my mind LOL) His ideas are fluid and coherent, seamless. I just looked at his touring schedule, can anybody tell me the next time he will be in the Lower 48 preferably the West Coast, or am I going to have to book a flight to Vancouver or New York. Thanks.
  3. Thanks. I'll try that.
  4. All of a sudden when I click on my amg icon from desktop, the page comes in for a second or two then "Ad Blocker" page appears and offers "SupportFreeContent premium plugin is offered. Any ideas on how to disable/remove this.

    Miles

I just saw the biopic "Miles Ahead" staring Don Cheadle. One the worse biopics I've ever seen. Right up there with James Brown. Stupid cops and robbers chase scene over a stolen reel to reel tape. Best part of the movie is the closing credits sequence at the end of the movie , enjoyed seeing Shorter and Hancock in that sequence. And the music/score, a patchwork with too much emphasis on his electric funk side. Seeing as how I met Miles and Francis when he appeared at Basin Street West in San Francisco, it was extra bad for me. Anyway, that's my take on it. I could go on.
  6. I'm having trouble justifying why D.J. is #4 on my list of drummers behind T. Williams, M. Roach and A. Blakey On which cd's will I find J. D's most bopish drumming as leader or sideman? Oops, I should have said #5 because I forgot E. Jones. I must be getting old. LOL paul secor, I'm afraid I would have to agree with that. I must have heard something years ago that put him in my group
  7. Thank you all very much............

    Cory Weeds

I love Cory Weeds. Discovered him a few months ago, had to buy all his titles. I think I read he has or had a club in Canada. Does he have a touring schedule as I'd love to see him live. Thanks......
  9. I thought I had every Lee Morgan recording as leader/sideman. Can someone tell me about this release. The liner notes do give some info. It was recorded just prior to the Lighthouse set.

    Roy Hargrove

Four day stint at Yoshi's San Francisco. This is a re-wind from March when he cancelled due to ill health. Has anyone caught his sets? Can you critique them for me. I couldn't make it, surgery got in the way. Thanks
  11. Doing my own research, I can't find anything by J. D. that sounds boppish enough for me to hear. I thought "Sound Travels" came close but no cigar. So, to the experts. On which session will I find Mr. DeJohnette at his most boppish, leader or side man. Thanks.
  12. Ok, as you can see I'm not here very often. But I'm one who has no problem admitting when I'm wrong, and after seeing Ambrose Akinmusire(he even pronounced his last name upon my request)live at Yoshi's in Oakland, I'm here to admit that I was TOTALLY wrong about this kid. I said that I couldn't hear any lineage in his recordings. There's nothing like a live session to clear up any misconceptions, AND THEY WERE ALL CLEARED UP ON TUE NIGHT, I was sitting at a table that was so close to the stage that it was touching the stage, I can tell you what all the guy's shoes looked like. I heard Hub blasted into my ears the entire session, Freddie Hubbard is coming through loud and clear in this kid. His writing skills are amazing at this early stage of his career. The drummer Justin Brown, phenomenal. At one point I closed my eyes and I thought I was listening to Tony Williams, unbelievable. Re: Walter Smith, after re-listening to "Casually Introducing Walter Smith III", a very solid Neo Bopper, I believe Neo Bop defines the group's sound and direction, Neo Bop soundly rooted in Hardbop. Harish Raghavan, a very solid bass player even though he hit an extreme sour note during an arco solo on one cut. IMHO the weakest link in this strong chain is the piano player Sam Harris. Some of his solos seemed to wander a bit. To top it off, Ambrose is a Native Son, local kid from Oakland, CA. Contrary to what I posted previously, I would choose this kid over any of the guys I mentioned, I have his 1st 2 releases, am re-listening to them and ordered the latest release(The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint)from Amazon just before I started writing this. Also, for someone who is relatively new to this game, he has an engaging, magnetic stage presence. There was a segment with a local drummer and keyboardist that could have been left out IMHO. Last, the worst thing about the set to my amazement, at the end of the set the audience did not make enough noise to bring the group back out for at least one more cut,(8pm set, no 10pm set) unbelievable....
  13. Re: Waking Dreams by Chris Dingman, on 11 of the 14 cuts, same elevator music for my ears, obviously xybert, you hear something different
  14. I can't understand what the fuss is all about. I purchased his first two releases to try my best to hear this kid. I'm sorry but this 64 yr old be/hardbop guy cannot hear this kid. IMHO, his sounds like sophisticated elevator music. No swing, no fingerpopin, foot/toe tapping involved, purely cerebral. Pretty music, beautiful music? Yes, no doubt about it. But all while I'm listening, my feet are still and my fingers are not popping. He's appearing at Yoshi's in Oakland on Tue 6-24-2014 and after re listening to sound samples of his releases(including the new one)I'm having second thoughts about hearing this elevator music live. On one of his releases he even gimmics up the Golson classic Stablemates. Maybe I'm having third thoughts about going. I've read otherwise, but I don't hear any lineage here. Do you? Same story with Walter Smith III who is a member of Akinmusire's quintet. There was a big fuss about him, same cerebral elevator music. What say you..........
  15. As I suspected, Thanks All the links on his page work except the email link, oh well. All the links on his page work except the email link, oh well.
  16. Can anyone tell me if these are available for purchase? On All Souls, I think the leader is Ron Agerbeek, this is from Holland, and could Soy Califa be the same as the Steeplechase release Jazz At High School?
  17. I am a HUGE Nathan Davis fan, I couldn't wait to see this dvd, my heart was pounding with anticipation, only to be let down. He was tentative, his ideas and technique were not as loose and fluid as they would become later on. You could clearly see he was in awe of if not intimidated by Hub. And IMHO,it's not that N.D.'s solos were too long, but that they became at some point monotonous/redundant(I guess that means they were too long LOL). Hub played a beautiful rendition of Blue Moon
  18. C'mon man, we're talking about overlooked people, are you folks joking around???
  19. Tom 1960, man, you've got to pick these titles: All To Real, American Experience, Change The World, Don't Let It Go, Early On(Evidence&Dawnbird), Ends And Means, Folklore, Mr. Wizzard, Scene One, Secret Love, Simple Pleasure, Sterling Place All-Stars, With Eric Alexander; Friendly Fire, Live At Smoke, The Battle,Live At Smoke, he made a few with Cedar Walton, at least one with Jeff Palmer
  20. Not sure, but V.H. said the group is doing a live recording session in Vancouver, Canada within the next week or two, I might go back tonight just to hear some more Vincent Herring
  21. Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson
  22. Caught this group; Louis Hayes, drums, Rick Germanson, piano, Dezron Douglas, bass, Jeremy Pelt, trumpet and Vincent Herring, alto sax. 8pm set at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. No 10pm set, really, what's goin on. Anyway, Vincent Herring clearly is the leader of this group and he was ON FIRE, blistering, blazing, RAZOR SHARP ideas and progressions, amazing bird-like rapid runs, Bird and Cannonball are alive and well within Vincent Herring and although V.H. has had his own voice for quite some time now, you can still hear that permanent cannonball influence. IMO, Herring is without question at the very top of the heap when it comes to today's alto sax men. Pelt was good although he stumbled a couple of times while transitioning from one idea to the next, but still very solid. Very funny intro to Work Song from Herring. Germanson had two beautiful solo pieces. Overall, a solid hard bop band circa 2013. This group and The Cookers are it for me. Joey DeFrancesco will be there this Fri and Sat and of course so will I.
  23. Deceased or living is the question. Of the deceased of course there's the usual suspects, Vaughan, Fitzgerald, McRae too many to mention. But I need some recommendations on the living. I'm familiar with Roberta Gamborini and Dianne Reeves although there's not a consensus as to whether she is a jazz singer, sounds like one to me. So, what say you all, whose at the top of her game in today's world. Totally off subject but it's been fascinating watching the anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination. When the news broke, I was 13 in my science class at Benjamin Franklin Jr High School, San Francisco, CA. Dirt bag went to Russia, came back and killed our beloved pres. Then another dirt bag kills the dirt bag that killed the pres, AMAZING, only in america........
  24. I've never purchased from a foreign web site, since you mentioned it, there must be a way to do it, right? I've never purchased from a foreign web site, since you mentioned it, there must be a way to do it, right? Web site says they can't ship to my address, oh well
  25. Of course you are correct, excuse me, I left out his sideman stuff. I've got to get the dvd live in '65. One of Blakey's unrecorded units with N.D. on reeds
