  1. I should have said no contemporary, post/neo bop, if it ain't based on solid 50's/60's style hardbop like Hailey Niswanger then i'm not going to hear it, it's not going to register...........
  2. very nice young female hardboper, her cd is on my purchase list......
  3. Again, not young or new. I'm with you JETman, keep me young and new............someone suggested Melissa Aldana, checked her out, I'm going to follow her. Im having difficulty hearing Stephens and Smith III, but I'm passed 60, that's probably the problem.......
  4. I meant to add Jimmy Greene
  5. How do you discover new, young jazz saxophone players. Here are some names I've discovered lately Wayne Escoffery Tim Warfield Dayna Stephens Victor Goines Mark Turner Mark Shim Seamus Blake Chris Cheek - just today Walter Smith III Stephens seems to be the center of attention at the moment. Any other suggestions..............
  6. Seems like K. Dorham has been on my mind and in my ears quite a bit lately especially Trompeta Toccata..............
  7. She was 63, I'm 62 and I vividly remember seeing her for the first time I think it was on the Johnny Carson show. To say that I was beside myself would be putting it mildly..............
  8. The greatest female jazz singer of all time Sarah Vaughan and Joe Williams, it's that simple...........
  9. If you could have only 5 sessions, which ones would they be?
  10. If you like Babe's Blues then I can't understand why you wouldn't like the majority of the rest of the Blue Notes........
  11. I appreciate your response.......
  12. I own 3000 cd's and counting. Had huge storage headache. Came to realize that while cd was great invention, the jewell case was not so I've had storage head aches for ever. Was at the Cadence Building web site and voila, ran into the "Jewell Case Be Gone Plastic Sleeves" $.15 a piece. What was on approx 30 shelves is now on approx 12. They come in two sizes, one side for tray and cd, other side for booklet, PERFECT, problem solved. Now when I buy something, I just stick it in it's alphabetical spot. Before I would have to rearrange my whole, when ever I accumulated 10 or 15 new cd's.............
  13. Like most folks after all these years Maiden Voyage remains my favorite by a hair over Takin Off because of Dex............

    Gene Harris

Two in a row, wow a record for me but I had to say that I have discovered and fell in love with The 3 Sounds. I can see why Blue Note made a lot of money off of them. I think Gene Harris was a genius of a piano player. Of course not in the sense of Tatum or Newborn, but as far as finger poppin soulfulness, imho, he was the very best. Remarkable how he maintained all those songs being the sole solo voice. Dowdy and Simpkins in this format were unmatched. And of course all these years later very hard to find and driving me to bankruptcy. I think this would make a great mosaic........
  15. Was searching as usual and ran across "Dexter Gordon Quintet At The Village Gate 1976" and my heart started to race. I haven't seen any review or heard any sound samples. Has anyone heard this, please tell me about this set. Thanks.........
  16. AMG used to be a topnotch outfit, don't know what happened...............
  17. Trying to complete Lee Morgan as a sideman. Saw "Gene Harris and the Three Sounds" in AMG. Does anyone know anything about or seen this LP anywhere. Thanks
  18. Thanks Paul, going to put that in the cd player, have a great day...............
  19. All you Bird experts, where will I find the source material or 1st generation cd of the Parker/Rodney version of KOKO. Thanks..............
  20. As far as complete sets are concerned, if you had to pick one, would it be the Verve or the Columbia set????????
  21. Saw Bobby Hutcherson on Friday night At Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA 1-28-2011. His 70th birthday was on the 27th. I must say he looked in bad shape. He is frail and has to use a portable breathing device with the plastic tubing in his nose. I could see him gasping for air from time to time. Didn't realize he was that ill. He was with guitarist Anthony Wilson, local man steady Eddy Marshall on drums(played a beautiful tune on a flute sounding instrument, I think it's a Recorder)the pianist and bassist names escape me. Hutch's music is fine, but, it's sad to see him in his current physical condition at only 70 years of age. If you don't smoke(doesn't matter what)don't start, if you do smoke, STOP.....................
  22. Why don't I see the LP "Chim Chim Cheree-Tribute To John Coltrane" on Venus in Eric Alexander's All Music Guide discography???
  23. There are so many. So, I'll limit it to Parker, Stitt, Adderley, McLean, Lou Donaldson, Benny Carter, Leo Wright, Sonny Criss, Phil Woods, Art Pepper, Paul Desmond, Ernie Henry, Vincent Herring, Jesse Davis, Frank Morgan, Pony Poindexter, Sonny Red, Frank Strozier, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, there's more but I'll cut it off here.......
  24. I should have added as a leader of the session..............
